Open Access•Lucy Louise Clarke, Benjamin Hine et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Sociology•2024•References: 27

Previous research suggests that the portrayal of male and female protagonists in Disney animations may be changing over time. The current study examined the portrayal of gendered behaviors displayed within some of Disney's most successful animated feature length films, including those beyond the Disney princess franchise. Extending the scope of the Disney animated films analyzed was important because both young girls and young boys report little …

  • Quantifying gender norm resistance

    Open Access•Matthew G Nielson, Charles L Martins et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Adolescence•2020

INTRODUCTION: Qualitative and mixed-methods researchers have described the experience of gender norm resistance in adolescence and identified potential types of resistance including indirect resistance (motivated by a preference for gender-atypicality) and direct resistance (motivated by dislike of gender norms and a desire to change them). Building on this work, we developed the Gender Norm Resistance measure to operationalize indirect and direc…

  • From the Sleeping Princess to the World-Saving Daughter of the Chief

    Open Access•Benjamin Hine, Katarina Ivanovic et al.•ARTICLE•Social Sciences•2018•Cited by: 10•References: 35

Both popular and academic discourse has noted progressive change in the gender role portrayals of much-loved Disney princess characters. However, at present, little is known about children's recognition of such changes, or of their interpretation of princesses' gendered behavior. This study therefore asked 131 8-9-year-old UK children to attribute various feminine and masculine characteristics to 'princesses' both before and after watching an 'ol…

  • The Rise of the Androgynous Princess

    Open Access•Benjamin Hine, Dawn E England et al.•ARTICLE•Social Sciences•2018•Cited by: 17•References: 65

Previous quantitative research examining Disney movies has highlighted that whilst prince characters display largely balanced gender profiles, princesses exhibit biased gender role portrayals-performing mostly feminine characteristics, rarely participating in rescue behavior, and concluding movies in romantic relationships with the prince. However, such research, as well as public commentary, has also suggested that princess characters in movies …

  • A Dual Identity Approach for Conceptualizing and Measuring Children's Gender Identity

Open Access•Charles L Martins, Carol Lynn Martin et al.•ARTICLE•Child Development•2017

The goal was to test a new dual identity perspective on gender identity by asking children (n = 467) in three grades (Mage = 5.7, 7.6, 9.5) to consider the relation of the self to both boys and girls. This change shifted the conceptualization of gender identity from one to two dimensions, provided insights into the meaning and measurement of gender identity, and allowed for revisiting ideas about the roles of gender identity in adjustment. Using …

  • Dynamical Analyses for Developmental Science

    Open Access•Matthew D DiDonato, Dawn E England et al.•ARTICLE•Human Development•2013

Dynamical systems theory is becoming more popular in social and developmental science. However, unfamiliarity with dynamical analysis techniques remains an obstacle for developmentalists who would like to quantitatively apply dynamics in their own research. The goal of this article is to address this issue by clearly and simply presenting several analytical techniques for the study of dynamics. We placed emphasis on the use of dynamical analysis …

  • Gender-Based Relationship Efficacy

    Open Access•Kristina M Zosuls, Ryan D Field et al.•ARTICLE•Child Development•2013•Cited by: 9•References: 14

This research introduces a new construct, gender-based relationship efficacy, which refers to beliefs about one's ability to relate to own- and other-gender peers. Study 1 investigated 204 fourth graders (M age = 9.56) and confirmed that own-gender and other-gender relationship efficacy represent distinguishable aspects of preadolescents' social competency beliefs that are differentially related to outcomes with own- and other-gender peers, inclu…
