Behaviouralism in political science
Behaviouralism in political science has come under attack from both conservative and radical members of the profession. One of the common targets of these critics is the behaviouralists’ ‘value-neutrality’, their insistence on distinguishing between facts and values. The radical critics have argued that the fact-value distinction distorts or impairs the very project that the behaviouralists are purportedly engaged in: the empirical study of polit…

‘A View from North of the Border’
This article surveys BBC Scotland’s ‘forgotten’ contribution to the history of the prime-time contemporary TV play slot on BBC1, including its contributions to The Wednesday Play (BBC TV, 1964–70) and its later leading involvement with The Play on One (BBC TV, 1988–91), following the demise of the London-produced Play for Today slot (BBC TV, 1970–84). The article argues that Scotland’s contribution to TV drama has been historically a rich one and…
Challenges and Opportunities of Using Digital Storytelling as a Trauma Narrative Intervention for Traumatized Children
This article address the challenges and opportunities of implementing a web-based Digital Storytelling (DS) curriculum to supplement the trauma narrative component of Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) for traumatized youth, ages 9-17, receiving mental health services at a rural domestic violence (DV) agency. Digital storytelling, as the term suggests, combines storytelling with technology that integrates a mixture of digital im…
Is Davidson a Gricean
In his recent collection of essays, Language, Truth and History (2005), Donald Davidson appears to endorse a philosophy of language which gives primary importance to the notion of the speaker’s communicative intentions, a perspective on language not too dissimilar from that of Paul Grice. If that is right, then this would mark a major shift from the formal semanticist approach articulated and defended by Davidson in his Inquiries into Truth and I…
Exile from the Mainstream
Based on extensive original research drawing upon material from radical British-born director Peter Watkins' own personal archive, this dossier sheds light on work Watkins did for Scandinavian television in the 1970s - The 70s People/70' ernes Folk (Denmark, 1974) and The Trap/Fällan (Sweden, 1975). It argues that the marginalisation Watkins experienced with these works illustrates the difficulties attendant upon the TV and film practitioner step…
The Past is Myself
The following article will examine one of those works made in ‘exile’: Watkins’ acclaimed television film, Edvard Munch (1973), which was first transmitted by the Norwegian public television service, NRK (Norsk Riksringkasting), as part of a joint production and telecast with its Swedish counterpart, SR (Sveriges Radio) on 12 and 13 November 1974. At the time, it was generally regarded as Watkins’ greatest film. Ingmar Bergman, after a screening …

A Geometric Amphora and Gold Band
Among the most interesting discoveries of the post-war years in Attica are a Late Geometric amphora and an impressed gold head-band; they are reported to have been found, the band inside the amphora, near Koropi in the Mesogaia, and were acquired together by Mrs. Helen Stathatou, who has graciously consented to my making them more widely known in this tribute to the master of Greek archaeology for whom both she and I have so high a regard. Each i…
