Enoch Powell and the Conservative Party
This article examines Enoch Powell's ‘Rivers of Blood’ speech in relation to the Conservative party. Powell's speech created an additional challenge to a Conservative party already weakened by the loss of the 1964 and 1966 elections and by the failure of the newly elected leader, Edward Heath, to impress his authority decisively on the party. Powell had some parliamentary support but his real following was concentrated in the Conservative grass r…
David Cameron and Conservative Renewal
The book explores the process of rebuilding the Conservative Party under David Cameron’s leadership since 2005. It argues that Cameron’s strategy was wide-ranging and multi-faceted and that it evolved through several stages from a coherent programme of explicit modernisation into a more diffuse set of reforms. This development was partly a result of changed thinking within the Party and partly because of the pressure of external events, especiall…
The regulation of standards in British public life
Integrity issues have become an important item on the British political agenda since the 1990s when ‘sleaze’ prompted John Major to set up the Committee on Standards in Public Life. The book analyses the range of ethical problems which confront the political system and the efforts to address them. It addresses the tightening of standards in response to misconduct in Parliament, in central and local government and in the devolved systems. It also …

Leadership and Politics
In this article I advance the argument that political scientists and students of leadership should engage with each other more extensively. In the first part of the article I look at some of the reasons why political scientists may have treated the phenomenon of leadership with suspicion in the past despite the resurgence of interest in issues associated with leadership in the last 20 years. In the second part of the article I sketch some key dim…

This article employs qualitative data from three California cities to specify how structural characteristics interact with personal factors to facilit…

Reflections on Generational Analysis
Diachronic investigation of partisan choice and issue orientation by generational analysis is a popular method of contemporary political research. There is as well increased interest in the role played by women in politics. Yet studies of European politics have rarely explored the utility of analysis which assumes shared generational political perspectives in explaining differences in the political behaviour and orientations of men and women. The Changed Character of British Foreign and Security Policy
The significance of the clear Conservative victory in the British general election of May 1979 has already become apparent in relation to domestic politics in that country. In the area of financial and economic policy in particular, almost every decision taken by the Conservative government suggests that Prime Minister Thatcher's administration intends to apply the rigorous monetarist doctrines that she spelled out during the election campaign, a…
