Ethical Debates in Research on Language and Interaction
When we talk about ethics in applied linguistics research, we typically refer to at least two distinct, albeit interrelated, areas: an ethical conduct in research involving human subjects and the moral ends of our research activity.
A Quiet Turning to the Language of Neighbours
This commentary foregrounds a sociolinguistic research agenda that seeks to generate ethical forms of political co‐existence in places of inhospitality. I adopt the lens of relational ethics that centres attending to those in our presence, our neighbours, without ambition of mastery. The politics of ethics seen through this lens confronts sociolinguistics with a paradox: What does an ethical demand to refrain from determining others mean in the f…
(Im)possibility of ethical encounters in places of separation
What is the possibility of ethical encounters in places that are historically, spatially, and morally configured to avoid them? And what can applied linguistics do to create such a possibility? This study is located in a rural community in eastern Slovakia with a history of separation between Slovak and Roma ethnic groups and the systemic spatial, economic and linguistic marginalisation of the latter. This paper draws on relational ethics to fore…
Introduction
This article explains the rationale for proposing an applied linguistics of ethical encounters. It does so by extending the current reach beyond the critical and ideological commentary of unjust linguistic practices and considers how applied linguistics research might play an active role in both theorising and enabling ethical encounters. By ethical encounters we mean those that enact the political vision of an inclusive and just society in face-…
Listening Without Borders
This book asks what it takes for people to encounter one another ethically when practices, worldviews and imaginations clash. It uses ‘listening’ as an encompassing metaphor for attending to others and engages over 40 contributors across geographies, disciplines, art forms and practices in a conversation which the reader is invited to join.
Knowledge Base of Language Teachers
Language teachers' knowledge base is a relatively young notion in applied linguistics. Although the professional preparation of language teachers has traditionally drawn from disciplines such as linguistics, literature, cultural studies, education, and second language acquisition (SLA), it was not until Richards and Nunan's (1990) seminal publication of second language teacher education research that a more systematic inquiry was initiated into w…
Language Teacher Cognition in Applied Linguistics Research
Understanding language teachers' mental lives (Walberg, 1972), and how these shape and are shaped by the activity of language teaching in diverse sociocultural contexts, has been at the forefront of the sub discipline of applied linguistics that has become known as language teacher cognition . Although the collective research efforts within this domain have contributed critical insights into what language teachers know, believe, and think in rela…
