  • Areal patterns and colexifications of colour terms in the languages of Africa

    Open Access•Guillaume Segerer, Martine Vanhove•ARTICLE•Linguistic Typology•2022

Of all the semantic domains, colour terms have attracted the largest amount of attention, notably from a typological point of view. However, there is much more to be discovered. A search of the cross-linguistic lexical database of African languages (RefLex) reveals several previously undetected areal colexification patterns and shared lexico-constructional patterns in a genetically balanced sample of 401 languages. In this paper, we illustrate se…

  • A diachronic semantic map of the Optative negative in Beja (North-Cushitic)

    Open Access•Martine Vanhove•ARTICLE•Zeitschrift für Sprachwissenschaft•2022

The Optative negative of Beja is a multifunctional paradigm which encodes optative, hortative and jussive grammatical meanings, depending on the person, as well as participant-internal and participant-external modalities of impossibility and unnecessity. It is also the sole paradigm licensed in balanced embedded clauses. Based on a large corpus of naturalistic first-hand data, this study analyses the various uses of the paradigm, provides an acco…

  • Diminutives and augmentatives in Beja (North-Cushitic)

    Martine Vanhove, Mohamed-Tahir Hamid Ahmed•ARTICLE•Studies in Language•2018

The evaluative morphology of Beja consists of four devices: gender shift to feminine on nouns, and sound change ( r > l ) on nouns, verbs and adjectives form the diminutives. A suffix -loːj on adjectives, and -l on Manner converbs, form the augmentatives. The analysis focuses on the evaluative, emotional and other pragmatic values associated with these morphemes, size, endearment, praise, romantic love, contempt, politeness and eloquence. When re…

  • Deixis, information structure and clause linkage in Yafi’ Arabic (Yemen)

Martine Vanhove•CHAPTER•Clause linking and clause hierarchy•2010

Several particles in the Arabic variety spoken in the area of Yafi’ (Yemen) show tight recurring links between deixis, informational hierarchy, and syntactic hierarchy, both diachronically and synchronically. In the light of Robert’s (1993, 2000) findings on focusing strategies, these links are discussed in detail for two polyfunctional particles, raʕ , and ta , which can be used, among other things, as deictics, topic markers, focusing particles…

  • Introducing Maltese Linguistics

Bernard Comrie, Ray Fabri et al.•EDITOR•BOOK•Introducing Maltese linguistics•2009

This collection of articles highlights a selection of on-going research projects. Phonological, morphological, and syntactic issues are addressed by international experts on Maltese. The diachronic development of Maltese, its age-long contact with Italo-Romance, and the present diglossic situation with co-official English are the topics of a variety of contributions to this volume. The repercussions that the promotion of Maltese to the status of …

  • From polysemy to semantic change

Martine Vanhove•EDITOR•BOOK•From polysemy to semantic change•2008

This book is the result of a joint project on lexical and semantic typology which gathered together field linguists, semanticists, cognitivists, typologists, and an NLP specialist. These cross-linguistic studies concern semantic shifts at large, both synchronic and diachronic: the outcome of polysemy, heterosemy, or semantic change at the lexical level. The first part presents a comprehensive state of the art of a domain typologists have long bee…

  • Typological approaches to lexical semantics

    Open Access•Maria Koptjevskaja-Tamm, Martine Vanhove et al.•ARTICLE•Linguistic Typology•2007•Cited by: 6•References: 4

    1. Introduction Although the term "lexical typology" is often used as if it were self-explanatory there is not much consensus on what exactly it can refer to, apart from the evident fact that it involves crosslinguistic research on the lexicon. Many linguists will probably agree with Lehrer's (1992: 249) widely quoted definition that lexical typology is concerned with the "characteristic ways in which language [...] packages semantic material int…

  • Les dialectes arabes des régions sud, centre et est du Yémen

    Open Access•Martine Vanhove•ARTICLE•Chroniques yéménites•1999

Les dialectes arabes parlés dans le sud, le centre et l’est du Yémen ont fait l’objet de recherches depuis la fin du 19ème siècle. C’est au savant suédois Carlo de Landberg que l’on doit une somme impressionnante sur deux groupes dialectaux : ceux du Hadramawt et du Dathina. A la même époque, le Britannique Stace publie un dictionnaire anglais-arabe dialectal d’Aden. Depuis, des maîtrises et thèses non publiées, des manuels, des articles sont ven…
