  • The Framing of Minority Threat and Moralization to Criminalize Behavior: The Case of Cannabis in the Early 20th Century

    Open Access•M Vuolo, B C Kelly et al.•ARTICLE•Social Problems•2025•Cited by: 1•References: 50

Understanding why particular behavior is encoded in law or other systems of rules has been a core topic of sociology since its inception. Although differing rhetorical frames have been identified in policy debates, little research directly links such rhetoric and policy passage. Centering framing theory, we use the case of U.S. cannabis criminalization via mixed-methods content analyses of 9,707 nationwide newspaper articles and event history ana…

  • Teaching Law and Society in the Sociology Classroom: Writing Assignments for Engaging the Sociolegal Imagination

    Open Access•Joy Kadowaki•ARTICLE•Teaching Sociology•2021•References: 24

A common learning goal of law-related courses taught in sociology classrooms is for students to gain an understanding of the sociological approach to law. This approach emphasizes viewing law as a social process and studying law by analyzing both legal and nonlegal phenomena. A challenge to students’ achievement of this learning goal is their preconceived notions of law as an inherently impartial and closed system. This note details a series of w…

  • The Contemporary Defended Neighborhood: Maintaining Stability and Diversity through Processes of Community Defense

    Open Access•Joy Kadowaki•ARTICLE•City and Community•2019•Cited by: 3•References: 9

This article extends Suttles’ (1972) theory of the defended neighborhood by applying the framework to a contemporary context and exploring the social processes that residents of a diverse community used to defend their neighborhood from change. Drawing on data from an ethnography of Beverly—a stably diverse, highly efficacious, upper middle–class neighborhood on Chicago's far southwest side—I identify and examine three defensive processes used by…

  • Independent and Interactive Effects of Smoking Bans and Tobacco Taxes on a Cohort of US Young Adults

    M Vuolo, B C Kelly et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2016•Cited by: 1•References: 54

Objectives. We examined the mutual effects of smoking bans and taxes on smoking among a longitudinal cohort of young adults. Methods. We combined a repository of US tobacco policies at the state and local level with the nationally representative geocoded National Longitudinal Survey of Youth 1997 (2004–2011) from ages 19 to 31 years and Census data, to examine the impact of tobacco policies on any current and daily pack smoking. The analytic samp…

  • A Multilevel Test of Constrained Choices Theory: The Case of Tobacco Clean Air Restrictions

Open Access•M Vuolo, Joy Kadowaki et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Health and Social…•2016•Cited by: 4•References: 67

According to Bird and Rieker's sociology of constrained choices, decisions and priorities concerning health are shaped by the contexts-including policy, community, and work/family-in which they are formulated. While each level received attention in the original and subsequent research, we contend their constrained choices theory provides a powerful multilevel framework for modeling health outcomes. We apply this framework to tobacco clean air res…
