Rural tourism and trail development
The Rock Island Trail, one of Missouri’s newest state parks, is a rail trail that will eventually span nearly 200 miles. Although designated as a state park, much of the trail remains under development, with state funding issues leaving significant responsibilities to individual communities. Differences in speed of development present both challenges and opportunities to understand factors influencing community perceptions. This study examined pe…
Does ownership matter? Comparing cave tourism operation between private and public caves
Examining environmental justice in legacy city climate action planning
We performed a content analysis of 15 legacy city climate action plans to identify how legacy cities in the U.S. are incorporating environmental justice into their climate adaptation and mitigation strategies. First, we evaluated the depth of discussion related to the three dimensions of environmental justice: distributive, procedural and recognition justice. Additionally, we assessed the extent to which legacy cities are discussing social equity…
Understanding Landowner Perceptions
Conservation of private lands is essential for protecting open space, supporting ecosystems and species, preserving resources, and facilitating outdoor recreation. One tool for private land conservation is a conservation easement – a voluntary legal agreement where a landowner surrenders certain rights to use or develop their property. This study explores landowner perceptions of perpetual conservation easements in areas of high conservation valu…
The meaningful elements of the Camino
Despite growing research on pilgrimage tourism, a comprehensive understanding of factors driving transformation remains limited. This study used a qualitative approach to identify meaningful elements of the Camino that facilitate pilgrims' transformative experience. Employing a data triangulation strategy, a content analysis was conducted on Camino pilgrims' social media posts and their responses to an open-ended survey questionnaire distributed …
Urban park visitor perceptions of climate change
This study examined urban park visitors’ concerns, beliefs, decision to visit, and support for management actions regarding climate change. A questionnaire was administered to 429 visitors at three city-owned parks in a Midwestern community in the United States, yielding a 46.4% response rate (n = 199). Overall, results showed participants were concerned about the impacts of climate change and were supportive of managerial actions aimed at mitiga…

Perceptions of Missouri Landowners With Land Trust Conservation Easements
Conservation easements are a legal tool to preserve and manage private lands. Understanding the factors that influence private landowners to place their land under a conservation easement provides important information for policy-makers and land conservation professionals. Our study sought to identify the perceptions of first-generation conservation easement Missouri landowners. We conducted 16 semi-structured interviews in summer and fall of 202…
Climate change adaptation plans
We examined the extent to which cities’ climate change adaptation plans, in U.S. cities broadly and in shrinking cities, discuss health equity/justice, including injustices related to green spaces. Using content analysis of 88 cities’ climate change adaptation plans, we coded for health, equity/justice, parks/green space, and joint usage of these terms. We made comparisons of keyword usage between shrinking and non-shrinking cities to examine how…
Impact of travel distance and experience use history on visitors’ climate friendly behavior and support for climate friendly management action
Despite growing concern about climate change and the potential impacts of tourism on the environment, little is known about visitor responses toward climate mitigation strategies in nature-based tourism settings or factors that influence them. This study examined the influence of travel distance and Experience Use History (EUH) on visitor willingness to engage in climate friendly behavior in state parks and their support for management actions to…

Can urban parks bridge deep divides? Assessing the effects of inter-racial social interaction in parks and public spaces on trust
The ability of urban parks and public spaces to address distrust and social isolation needs to be rigorously tested, as the predominance of such claims may crowd out discussions of environmental racism and structural inequality. This study tested some commonly stated claims about parks’ influence on social well-being using a survey of residents in St. Louis, Missouri. We tested relationships between park and public space visitation frequency, pos…
Measuring place of residence across urban and rural spaces
Place of residence is one factor that may affect individual engagement and experiences in outdoor recreation. In this paper we assess four measures of place of residence and their associations with fears related to outdoor recreation. Data are from a statewide survey of Missouri households conducted in 2013 (n = 3,204). Logistic regression models are used to examine different measurements of place of residence and their relationship to the likeli…
Park availability and physical activity, TV time, and overweight and obesity among women
The Impact of a Signalized Crosswalk on Traffic Speed and Street-Crossing Behaviors of Residents in an Underserved Neighborhood
Investigating Issues of Environmental Injustice in Neighborhoods Surrounding Parks
Parks are important resources for facilitating community health. Using an environmental justice framework, this study in Kansas City, Missouri examined disparities by income and race/ ethnicity for bordering land uses, densities of incivilities (e.g., vandalism, litter), unhealthy retail establishments in neighborhoods surrounding parks. Low and medium income and high minority park neighborhoods were more likely to be surrounded by higher densiti…
Are park proximity and park features related to park use and park-based physical activity among adults? Variations by multiple socio-demographic characteristics
BACKGROUND: Parks are valuable resources for physical activity (PA) given their widespread availability and low cost to maintain and use. Both proximity to parks and the availability of particular features are important correlates of PA. However, few studies have explored multiple measures of proximity simultaneously or the specific facilities associated with park use and park-based PA among adults, let alone differences across socio-demographic …

Exploring the Distribution of Park Availability, Features, and Quality Across Kansas City, Missouri by Income and Race/Ethnicity
Parks are key community assets for physical activity, but some evidence suggests these resources are not equitably distributed. This study examined disparities by income and race/ethnicity in the availability, features, and quality of parks across Kansas City, Missouri. All parks and census tracts (CTs) were mapped using geographical information systems, and park features and quality were determined via audits. Multivariate analyses of covariance a…
Differentiating Place Attachment Dimensions Among Proximate and Distant Visitors to Two Water-Based Recreation Areas
People–place studies suggest that groups have varied bonds to a resource and that these bonds likely vary by residential proximity; however, previous research that explored these differences by residence treated place attachment as unidimensional. Therefore, this study differentiates two place attachment dimensions (place identity and place dependence) among distant (nonresidents) and proximate (community residents) visitors to two water-based re…
Leisure Time Physical Activity of Park Visitors
This study extends the leisure constraints research. Specifically, the constraints-effects-mitigation model is examined in the context of park visitors' leisure time physical activity (LTPA). Model structure differences are tested between respondents in two stages of regular physical activity. Findings support the model where negotiation partially mediates the constraint-participation and motivation-participation relationships. Differences in the…
Coping
Leisure constraint research has made significant contributions to the leisure field, and continues to evolve. Despite progress in understanding constraint negotiation, a comprehensive framework remains absent. Coping models have many parallels to the leisure constraint model, and can offer a deeper understanding of constraint negotiation by (a) recognizing additional personal and situational variables, (b) detailing the appraisal process, (c) def…
