  • Word-monitoring reaction time as a measure of implicit and explicit abstract phonological knowledge

    T Y Chen, Tsung-Ying Chen•ARTICLE•Language Awareness•2026

  • Modeling cross-linguistic variation in phonological grain size via wordlikeness judgments

    Open Access•T Y Chen, James Myers•ARTICLE•Open Linguistics•2026

Speech production and recognition studies have revealed cross-linguistic variation in the grain size of phonological processing, particularly in the relative importance of individual segments and segment strings (analytical processing) and entire word forms (holistic processing). This variation has been ascribed to orthography (alphabets highlight individual phonemes) and/or syllabary size (the fewer the syllable types, the easier to process them…

  • The “Starting-Small” Effect in Phonology

    Open Access•T Y Chen•ARTICLE•Language and Speech•2024•Cited by: 1•References: 4

The starting-small effect is a cognitive advantage in language acquisition when learners begin by generalizing on regularities from structurally simple and shorter tokens in a skewed input distribution. Our study explored this effect as a potential explanation for the biased learning of opaque and transparent vowel harmony. In opaque vowel harmony, feature agreement occurs strictly between adjacent vowels, and an intervening “neutral vowel” block…

  • On the learnability of level-based and unit-based tonal OCP generalizations

    Open Access•T Y Chen•ARTICLE•Glossa a journal of general…•2022

In previous research of tonal phonology, contour tones were assumed to be phonologically presented not only as a sequence of level tones but also as a single unit. Obligatory Contour Principle (OCP) constraints, by extension, were thought to prohibit identical level tones associated to adjacent terminal nodes (OCP-Terminal) and identical adjacent tonal units (OCP-Unit). This proposal has nevertheless been challenged theoretically and empirically.…

  • Worldlikeness

    T Y Chen, Tsung-Ying Chen et al.•ARTICLE•Linguistics Vanguard•2021

Worldlikeness, hosted online at https://worldlikeness.org , is a free Web crowdsourcing experimental tool and database that seeks to make it easier to generate and share cross-linguistic processing data. Adopting HTML5 technology and a responsive Web design using the JavaScript-based Meteor package, Worldlikeness supports the use of text and multimedia stimuli in a user interface optimized for participants using either desktops or mobile devices.…

  • An inductive learning bias toward phonetically driven tonal phonotactics

    T Y Chen, Tsung-Ying Chen•ARTICLE•Language Acquisition•2020

In two artificial grammar learning experiments, we tested the learnability of tonal phonotactics forbidding non-domain-final rising tones (*NonFinalR) against the phonotactics banning non-domain-final high-level tones (*NonFinalH). We propose that a firm phonetic ground drives a presumably innate inductive bias favoring *NonFinalR and against *NonFinalH. In Exp. I, we trained two groups of participants with an artificial language conforming to ei…

  • Cognitive Function as a Prospective Predictor of Falls

    T Y Chen, Tuo‐Yu Chen et al.•ARTICLE•The Journals of Gerontology…•2012•Cited by: 5•References: 2

Although cognitive measures at baseline were significantly associated with falls and recurrent falls at follow-up, these measures did not predict falling after considering known risk factors of falls and psychomotor speed. Thus, it may be that simple measures of psychomotor speed are more salient predictors of falls than cognitive measures

  • Some remarks on Contour Tone Units

  • Increasing taxes to reduce smoking prevalence and smoking attributable mortality in Taiwan

    David T Levy, C P Wen et al.•ARTICLE•Tobacco Control•2005

Tax rises have the ability to substantially affect smoking rates in Taiwan. These effects grow over time and lead to substantial savings in lives and health care costs
