  • Fried avec Debord

    Open Access•Victor Tupitsyn•ARTICLE•Journal of Visual Culture•2017

The title of this article alludes to Jacques Lacan’s text ‘Kant avec Sade’ (1963). With that in mind, the author compares Michael Fried’s Art and Objecthood (1998[1967) to Guy Debord’s The Society of the Spectacle, also published in 1967. Whereas Fried unleashes his criticism against ‘the condition of theatre’ and its mounting presence in the realm of visual culture, Debord accuses spectacle of ‘becoming a life style’, endorsed by power structure…

  • The Institute of Total Supply

    Victor Tupitsyn•ARTICLE•Third Text•2011

In cultural practices, agonistic exchange is involved in the rhetoric of arguments and disputes containing an abundance of verbal ‘offerings’, which, in spite of differences of opinion, can be neither refuted nor rejected. Within the framework of verbal agonistic exchange, principles and convictions become ‘cult objects’, accessories of ritual. The ritual nature of the dispute does not allow it to be resolved in non‐ritual space. Inasmuch as cult…

  • Boris Mikhailov

    Victor Tupitsyn•ARTICLE•Third Text•2011

Boris Mikhailov's optics is attuned to gaps, to sliding along the sharp edges of ruptures. At the moment of shooting this photographer resembles a terrorist who is pulling the ‘trigger’ of the camera to blow up himself and those around him. Many of his snapshots are accompanied by texts written on the margins, above or below the image. His Red Series (1975–1982) deals with ‘unauthorised’ recollection of public events: jubilant demonstrations, law…

  • Margins of Error

    Victor Tupitsyn•ARTICLE•Third Text•2011

In the 1920s, the term ‘factography’ was coined by Russian revolutionary artists and theorists (such as Tret'iakov, Chuzhak, Brik and Vertov). This was a utopian dream, pursued by very talented and idealistic people, who failed to understand that there should have been two kinds of factography – positive and negative, affirmative and non-affirmative: a factography of de jure legitimate actions (promulgated by the State) and a factography of ‘ille…

  • Notes on Globalisation

    Victor Tupitsyn•ARTICLE•Third Text•2009

In December 2008 Muntadar al‐Zaidi, an Iraqi journalist, paved the way for anything parked in a gallery space to be regarded as ‘the work of art in the age of shoe‐throwing’. However advisable, a tendency to challenge global ambitions with something all‐encompassing may well be diagnosed as psycho‐mimetic reciprocation. To avoid this, the author uses fragmentation as a tool to confront globalisation, which is why his article consists of relativel…
