  • Thailand 2022

Open Access•Edoardo Siani•ARTICLE•ASIA MAIOR The Journal of the…•2023

In 2022, Thailand entered a period labelled by state agents as "post-pandemic". Citizens resumed their lives as normal, but discontents for a stagnant political environment and a slow economic recovery intensified. In particular, civil society expressed frustration toward the Constitutional Court for allowing PM Prayuth Chan-ocha to remain in office despite the alleged legal expiry of his mandate. The Prayuth Government’s continued cordiality to …

  • Co-opting the stars

    Open Access•Edoardo Siani•ARTICLE•Journal of Southeast Asian Studies•2023•Cited by: 3•References: 2

Beginning in 2020, young people in Thailand have led rallies to protest the interference of the military and the monarchy in politics. They have also condemned the role played by Buddhist discourse and court ritual in celebrating kings as divine. 'No God, No King, Only Human' reads a protest sign. Simultaneously, however, some groups of protesters have used the same 'religious' repertoire, such as the astrological tradition of the court, in their…

  • Thailand 2019-2021

Open Access•Edoardo Siani•ARTICLE•ASIA MAIOR The Journal of the…•2021

2019-2021 was a peculiar triennium for Thailand. In 2019, the military leaders who had seized power five years earlier with a coup d’état formed a civilian government via a carefully managed general election. Concomitantly, King Maha Vajiralongkorn, on the throne since 2016, underwent his coronation. While the rituals celebrated the formal beginning of his reign, the King exercised his influence over politics in ways deemed unusual for a country …

  • The Diviner and the Billionaire

    Edoardo Siani•ARTICLE•Made in China Journal•2020

A Bangkok roadside diviner examines two luxurious skyscrapers along the river. He believes that they were erected by Thailand’s largest corporation, the CP Group (Zheng Da in Chinese), on the instructions of their formidable in-house diviners. The master replicates a Buddhist discourse, according to which wealth flows naturally to those who can unlock the secrets of the cosmos

  • Stranger diviners and their stranger clients

    Open Access•Edoardo Siani•ARTICLE•South East Asia Research•2018•References: 12

Marshall Sahlins argues that kings are ‘stranger kings’, as they typically originate from outside their kingdom or from the celestial realms. He advances that kings draw authority precisely from an ability to appropriate a geographic and cosmological Other for the benefit of their subjects. With this article, I propose that, in contemporary Thailand, a kingdom ruled by a Buddhist monarch, this defining ability of kings spreads to commoners. An et…
