‘Being in the World’: A photo essay
Cosmopolitanism is not an ethical position picked off the shelves of moral or political philosophy; cosmopolitanism is a disposition carved out of the struggles of the self, the cravings and anxieties, fears and desires that navigate our being in the world. The polysemic nature of the terms screen, frame and focus enables a cross-pollinating analysis of cultural texts and photographic experimentation. Foregrounding the experiential and autobiogra…

Introspective cosmopolitanism: The family in the Greek Weird Wave
This article reframes the critical discourse around the ‘Greek Weird Wave’ using an approach informed by theoretical work on cosmopolitanism. Focussing on Yorgos Lanthimos’s Dogtooth (2009) and Athena-Rachel Tsangari’s Attenberg (2010), the critical interpretation of the role of the family is radically rethought. I argue that the privileging of allegorical readings of the family in the Weird Wave films constitutes a form of critical denial of the…
Asian Cinemas: A Reader and Guide
Asian cinema is an area of increasing interest in Anglo-US film studies while Asian films are now widely distributed and popular with western audiences. The fascination with Asian cinema must be examined in the context of a complex and often problematic relationship between western scholars, students, viewers and Asian films. This book, therefore, examines a number of detailed case studies (such as the films of Ozu, Bruce Lee, Hong Kong and Turki…
Art, truth and reality, Cavafy, and cultural studies: A personal perspective
This essay represents a personal and polemical perspective that considers recent cultural and political events in order to reaffirm some of the key principles of cultural studies as a discipline. Particular attention is given to the so-called Cavafy controversy in Greece, and the essay outlines a cultural studies position in relation to it
The foreignness of Jules Dassin: Notes on cosmopolitan authorship
This essay proposes that a position of foreignness clearly emerging from biographical aspects of Jules Dassin's career also surfaces in textual practices of his films and substantially characterizes critical responses and evaluations of his work. Dassin was often marginalized by studios, producers and government agencies, while at other times he positioned himself as an outsider in a selfconscious manner. Critical responses are fragmented, demons…

Reading subtitles: Travelling films meet foreign spectators
By focusing on subtitles, this chapter maps out and delineates critical positions as they emerge within film theory and ‘world cinema’ in order to investigate their limitations. It proposes an understanding of ‘foreign spectators’ as characters encountered in the travels of films but explores this metaphor with a shift in point of view away from that of the traveller. It views subtitles as the marks of a journey, imprinted on the bodies of travel…
Cinematic JourneysFilm and Movement: Film and Movement
This book explores the interconnected histories, theories, and aesthetics of mobile vision and cinematic movement. It traces the links between certain types of movement of/in the frame and broader cultural trends that have historically informed Western sensibilities. It contextualises that genealogy with detailed analysis of contemporary and recent ‘travel films’ as well as older works. It investigates how movements of exploration, discovery and …

Popular Cinemas of Europe: Studies of Texts, Contexts and Frameworks
This book challenges the established conceptual and historical paradigm in Anglo-American film studies that perceives European cinema as essentially 'high art.' Through a study of the specific contexts in which popular European films are produced, distributed and exhibited, the book proposes new analytical and critical frameworks for their study. Films analyzed in the book include Cinema Paradiso, Mediterraneo, Bhaji on the Beach, Until the End o…

This special issue of PORTAL constitutes an indirect, sideways reflection on the EU’s move toward (re-)discovering, establishing, and promoting shared cultural values. It seeks to unveil not the official historical contexts and traditions in which contemporary inventions of cultural identity occur. Rather, its aim is to discover and listen to competing voices and alternative visions—be they cultural, social, political, literary or cinematic—that …
