  • Hydro-knowledges in motion: Participatory water knowledge in the Andes

Open Access•C Llano, Karen Olate et al.•ARTICLE•Cultural Geographies•2026

Water flows through bodies and territories not only as a necessity but also as a conduit of meanings and relationships. This essay reflects on a transdisciplinary encounter between local and scientific knowledges during an artistic residency in the highland basin of the Río Grande, southern Mendoza, Argentina. Through performance, we co-produced knowledge with transhumant families. Walking, measuring, tasting, and sharing became practices that en…

  • Diversity in Socioecological Niches in the Andes (Disenia): An Isotope-Based Project

    Open Access•R Barberena, A Tessone et al.•ARTICLE•Antiquity•2023•Cited by: 2•References: 6

This new project studies the diversity of socioecological niches across the agropastoral transition in the Andes, utilising a multi-isotope approach to track human territories and allocate subsistence tasks. During the agropastoral period, we discriminate different diachronic niches with varying extents of maize farming and altitudinal mobility

  • Scale of human mobility in the southern Andes (Argentina and Chile): A new framework based on strontium isotopes

    Open Access•R Barberena, Víctor A Durán et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•2017•Cited by: 14•References: 52

Despite the large socio-economic changes recorded, 87 Sr/ 86 Sr values indicate a persisting scenario of low systematic mobility between the different geological regions. Our results suggest that strontium isotope values provide the most germane means to track patterns of human occupation of distinct regions in complex geological landscapes, offering a much higher spatial resolution than oxygen isotopes in the southern Andes

During the last several years, information from stable isotopes has been used to discuss the role of maize agriculture in prehistoric economies of southern Mendoza. Because maize is one of several sources of 13C enriched carbon, a full evaluation of prehistoric diets requires data on a range of potential C3 and C4 plant resources. In this paper, we present stable isotope data (N = 89) for a suite of five previously unstudied edible cacti possessi…

Archaeologists have become increasingly interested in understanding the conditions under which resource intensification occurs. In the case of vegetal foods, the process often ends with the adoption of agriculture. In this article we explore wild plant resource intensification using archaeobotanical information from three sites located in the upper Diamante river basin, Mendoza province, Argentina. The area was populated by humans ca 8000 BP and …

In a number of areas around the world researchers have begun to use the isotopic values of subsistence resources as a means of determining diets of human populations. The objective of the present study is to classify the plant species present at distinct altitudes in southern Mendoza Province, Argentina, considering photosynthetic pathways in order to determine their δ 13C isotopic signature. This will help to understand the relationships between…
