  • Symptom Duration and Risk Factors for Delayed Return to Usual Health Among Outpatients with Covid-19 in a Multistate Health Care Systems Network — United States, March–June 2020

Open Access•Mark W Tenforde, Sara Kim et al.•ARTICLE•MMWR. Surveillance Summaries•2020

Prolonged symptom duration and disability are common in adults hospitalized with severe coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Characterizing return to baseline health among outpatients with milder COVID-19 illness is important for understanding the full spectrum of COVID-19-associated illness and tailoring public health messaging, interventions, and policy. During April 15-June 25, 2020, telephone interviews were conducted with a random sample of …

  • Istanbul's intangible cultural heritage as embodied by street animals

    Kimberly W Hart, Kimberly Hart•ARTICLE•History and Anthropology•2019•Cited by: 3•References: 8

Green, marginal, and sacred spaces in Istanbul host dogs, cats, and wild birds. In this essay, I argue that citizens enact embodied memories from the Ottoman era by caring for these animals. While birds are iconic representatives of the modern city, and street cats have become media denizens, the lives of street dogs are sadder. Animal rights activists are mobilized by the history of Ottoman administration efforts at eradicating them. Unlike acti…

  • Modernist Desires Among Recent Migrants in Western Turkey

    Open Access•Kimberly W Hart, Kimberly Hart•ARTICLE•Nordic Journal of Migration…•2011•References: 28

In western Turkey, villagers have been engaged in a self-constructed modernization programme since the early 1980s, which includes founding and running a women's carpet-weaving cooperative and selecting aspects of the state's modernization project for their own use. Recently many have been losing hope, and young women in particular are abandoning rural life by marrying men employed in the city. This structural move allows them to stop weaving and…

  • The orthodoxization of ritual practice in western Anatolia

    Open Access•Kimberly W Hart, Kimberly Hart•ARTICLE•American Ethnologist•2009•Cited by: 6•References: 52

In rural western Turkey, villagers have replaced male performances of davul (bass drum) and zurna (double-reed wind instrument) as well as men's dancing with mevluts, special prayer services, and they have replaced women's dances to taped or live electric harmonium music with sohbets, sermons. Villagers are motivated to transform "cultural practices" that appear "backward" from the perspective of state-based ideologies of cultural progress and th…

  • Love by arrangement: The ambiguity of 'spousal choice' in a Turkish village

    Open Access•Kimberly W Hart, Kimberly Hart•ARTICLE•Journal of the Royal Anthropologica…•2007•Cited by: 33•References: 22

Through an ethnographic story of a couple in a village in western Turkey who met by arrangement and created a romance before marriage, I explore the relationship between courtship and ideologies of modernity. Parents have absorbed the prejudice that arranged marriage is outmoded and claim they refuse to arrange marriages as a sign of enlightened modernity. In contrast to ideological claims, arranged marriage is not uncommon. Today, arranged marri…
