Does the Japan Science and Technology Agency Index of Competence ( JST ‐ IC ) Predict Mortality? Findings From the Sonic Study
A higher Japan Science and Technology Agency Index of Competence (JST-IC) score-an index of higher-level functional ability among older Japanese adults-was associated with a lower long-term risk of all-cause mortality, with significant associations observed across all age groups and among those in their 80s, but not among those in their 70s.
Longitudinal Association Between the Carotid Intima‐Media Thickness and Sarcopenia in an Older Japanese Population: The Sonic Study
Everyday Social Interactions and Affect in Very Old Adults: A Daily Diary Study
The beneficial role of social relationships in the well‐being of older adults has been well documented. However, little is known about how social interactions contribute to well‐being in very old adults aged 80 years and above. This study examined between‐ and within‐person associations between social interactions and affect in very old adults' daily lives. Fifty‐seven community dwellers (age 82 to 86 years) responded to a daily diary questionnai…

To What Age Do Japanese People Wish to Live: The Impact of Age Stereotypes
The images we have concerning aging and older people influence our health, well-being, and longevity; however, we do not know which of its aspects (e.g., health, appearance, and personality) positively or negatively affect us. Therefore, to clarify the impact of images of aging on our desire to live long, which impacts our healthy behavior, we conducted an internet survey targeting 1,000 people aged between 30 and 75 years old in Japan in 2018. W…
The Function of Leisure Activity Measure (FLAM): A Multidimensional Assessment Tool for Older Adults
Cohort Differences in Aging Self-Perceptions Among Japanese Older Adults
Various individual resources for successful aging have improved during the last decades. However, a limited number of studies have examined historical changes in how older individuals view their own aging. This study examined cohort differences in aging self-perceptions among Japanese older adults. Using nationally representative data obtained 9 years apart in 1987 and 1996, we compared two cohorts born in the 1920s versus the 1930s. To control f…
Successful Aging in a Rural Community in Japan
Early- to late-life environmental factors and late-life global cognition in septuagenarian and octogenarians: The Sonic study
This study aimed to evaluate cognitively stimulating environments throughout life and to examine direct and indirect associations between these environments and late-life cognition. Early-life education, three domains of work complexity (data, people, and things) based on the longest-held occupation, and engagement in late-life leisure activities (LAs) were assessed. A structural equation model was developed using cross-sectional data of 1721 Jap…
Factors Related to Preventive Behaviors against a Decline in Physical Fitness among Community-Dwelling Older Adults during the Covid-19 Pandemic: A Qualitative Study
Older adults face the concern of developing frailty and sarcopenia due to an inactive lifestyle during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. This study aimed to reveal the preventive behaviors taken by older adults who perceived a decline in physical fitness during COVID-19 and analyze the background factors which promoted such behaviors using a qualitative study design in 2020. The participants were recruited through the cohort study…
CBSI as a Social Innovation to Promote the Health of Older People in Japan
In this paper, we introduce a concept called community-based social innovation (CBSI). CBSI programs have been introduced to improve the physical and psychological well-being of older people. CBSI programs encourage older people to (1) take care of themselves and their peers, (2) sustain their well-being, and (3) create a cohesive and inclusive community. Although the emergence of CBSI programs is a global phenomenon, the variations, effectivenes…
The Transnational Negotiation of Selfhood, Motherhood and Wifehood: The Subjectivities of Japanese Women through Oyako-Ryūgaku in Hawaii
The existing scholarship on middle and upper-class East Asian transnational families accompanying their children to English-speaking countries has mainly focused on long-term transnational migration pattern. However, we know less about the short-term pattern, and how it affects the subjectivities of migrants. By conducting a case study of Japanese women participating in oyako-ryūgaku (a short-term parent-child study abroad trip) with their childr…
Teaching Associates: Bridging Informal and Formal Mechanisms of Support for Graduate Student Instructors
Faculty members and graduate student instructors (GSIs) spend a significant portion of their time in the classroom. Much of the literature calls for formal training for graduate students in pedagogy and teaching techniques (DeCesare 2003), and increasing attention has been paid to the benefits of informal supports for GSIs, such as peer networks. But scholars have paid far less attention to examining how formal and informal mechanisms of support …
The Culture of Fatherhood in Japanese Comic Strips: A Historical Analysis
Has the culture of fatherhood in Japan changed since the end of the Second World War? If so, how? Relying on a content analysis of 246 Japanese comic strips published on Father's Day and Mother's Day between 1950 and 2004, we hypothesize about the effects of economic and other social forces on the culture of fatherhood, and illustrate how cultural shifts can proceed in steps. Our findings suggest that the culture of fatherhood in Japan changed in…
