  • Old Concepts Making New History

    Open Access•Claudena M Skran, Claudena Skran et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Refugee Studies•2019•Cited by: 24•References: 3

Although not new topics in the field of refugee studies, self-reliance, livelihoods and entrepreneurship have recently taken on a heightened emphasis. However, critical questions remain regarding how and by whom self-reliance is defined and measured, and the intended and unintended outcomes of historical and contemporary efforts to foster it. This introductory article highlights key points arising from the Special Issue and presents a short histo…

  • Refugee entrepreneurship and self-reliance

    Open Access•Claudena M Skran, Claudena Skran•ARTICLE•Journal of Refugee Studies•2019•References: 6

Entrepreneurship has been advocated as a path to self-reliance for refugees, but little scholarship has been produced about refugee entrepreneurs operating in their country of origin during reintegration. In 2003–04, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) implemented a group of ‘entrepreneurial ventures’ in urban and peri-urban locations in Kambia, Sierra Leone. Fifteen years later, 20 per cent of these ventures were still oper…

  • Unhcr’s Gender Policy for Refugees and Returnees in Sierra Leone

    Claudena M Skran•ARTICLE•African and Asian Studies•2015•References: 18

The challenge of ensuring the full reintegration of refugee women and returnees in post-conflict societies is an important one, yet there is gap in the literature that evaluates interventions designed to assist them. This article seeks to narrow this gap by examining the gender policy of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees ( unhcr ) as applied to reintegration programs in Sierra Leone, particularly in Kailahun district…

  • Population Resettlement in International Conflicts

    Claudena M Skran•ARTICLE•Journal of Refugee Studies•2008

This work, written under the auspices of the Leonard Davis Institute for International Relations at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and the outgrowth of an international conference held there in May 2004, bears a somewhat misleading title. Rather than being a general study of population resettlement, half the cases focus on Palestine and/or Israel. Moreover, the volume is expressly concerned with the relevance that historical case studies have…

  • "The study of refugees before "Refugee Studies

    Claudena M Skran, C Skran et al.•ARTICLE•Refugee Survey Quarterly•2007•Cited by: 10

Scholarship on refugee studies involves a wide variety of academic disciplines, including international relations and international law, anthropology and sociology, as well as economics, demography, geography, psychology, and history. This article traces the emergence of the field of refugee studies over the period 1920 to 1980, exploring its intellectual roots in some of the most important works about refugees and the pioneering scholars that pr…

  • Refugees in Inter-War Europe

    Claudena M Skran, Claudena Skran•BOOK•Refugees in inter-war Europe•1995

In inter-war Europe, millions of refugees, including Russians, Armenians, Greeks, and Jews, constituted a major humanitarian and political issue. This book examines the origins of refugee movements of the 1920s and 1930s and international responses to them. The book argues that international assistance efforts by governments, the League of Nations, and private organizations were part of an international regime, and this regime had - and continues…

  • The International Refugee Regime

    Open Access•Claudena M Skran•ARTICLE•Journal of Policy History•1992•Cited by: 1•References: 16

In the 1990s, an increasing number of refugees make their way to the countries of the West. While the annual number of asylum seekers to Western Europe and North America averaged about 20,000 in the mid- 1970s, by 1990 this figure had jumped to more than 500,000. Unlike previous migrants, many of these asylum seekers came from non-Western countries, including Iran, Turkey, Sri Lanka, and Ghana. Their flight to the West was but a small part of a w…

  • Profiles of The First Two High Commissioners

    Claudena M Skran•ARTICLE•Journal of Refugee Studies•1988

Refugees are not new to the twentieth century. International refugee assistance programmes, however, have only been in existence since 1921. In that year, the League of Nations responded to an appeal from the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to assist the more than one million Russian refugees then scattered throughout Europe. The League accepted this challenge by appointing a High Commissioner for Refugees, the first international…
