Dialogues on Agential Realism
Dialogues on Agential Realism is built up around dialogues with key scholars in the field: Magdalena Górska, Astrid Schrader, Elizabeth de Freitas, Ericka Johnson and Karen Barad. The book investigates agential realist-inspired research practices and provides illustrations of what response-able knowledge production may involve. Based on thorough readings of the scholars’ work, careful dialogues concerning the challenges, messiness, thrill and inv…
Mattering pedagogy in precarious times of (un)learning
This paper considers how feminist new materialist thinking may offer a resource for re-orienting pedagogy in light of pressing global issues such as climate change and political unrest. The paper applies feminist new materialist thinking to develop a new pedagogical agenda. I argue that pedagogies are always already normative or are engaged in practices that play a role in opening up to various and un-usual ways of relating and being in and to th…
Students of reforms. Investigating and troubling the enactment of student voices in research on reform
We investigate how students’ voices are enacted in reform processes and in research on reforms. Our theoretical stance on the concept of reform is performative and onto-epistemological; thus, we understand reforming as an entangled multiplicity, co-emerging and co-morphing. Reforming reconfigure what ‘is’ and intra-act with what is already there. The article focus on a reform of the Danish primary and secondary school. We work with three differen…
A Pace of Our Own? Becoming Through Speeds and Slows - Investigating Living Through Temporal Ontologies of The University
This article is concerned with new feminist materialism's transformatory ethical potential with regards to the (fast) neoliberal university. It is also shaped and inspired by Karen Barad's question: 'How can I be responsible for that which I love?' (Barad 2016). The text thus investigates possibilities of thinking through new materialist theorising and concepts for examining conditions of the im/possibilities of living live-able academic lives in…
Orchestrating intensities and rhythms
The aim of this article is to trace how contemporary (post)psychologies, when used as psy-leadership tools in order to reach new standards, may create new work around the standards and may also create new subjectivities. It is well known that education is a field in which standardization and the making of subjects have held sway for many years; and it is also well known that schools have been some of the most regular purchasers of psychological m…
The return of the Freudian Couch ®
This article explores how the affective “set-up” of Freud’s legendary couch has been exported into modern education relations. The so-called psy-sciences from pedagogy, psychology, and psychiatry have informed self-management in school. Managing self-management has a material-affective dimension. Through affective encounters with the couch, we argue, management can foster and maintain students’ desire to take part in school and enhance their own …
Gendered subjectivities of spacetimematter
This paper investigates enactments of human subjectivities with a focus on how subjectivities may be studied if spatiality and temporality are taken up as constituting forces in the production of subjectivities. By reading poststructuralist feminist theorising, agential realism and empirical material diffractively through each other I re-situate gendered subjectivity to be of spacetimemattering [Barad, K. 2007. Meeting the Universe Half Way – Qua…
Intra-active Entanglements – An Interview with Karen Barad
This interview was conducted on a balcony, overlooking the Mediterranean Sea (with airplanes taking off and landing above our heads) during the Third International Symposium on Process Organization Studies, at Corfu, Greece in June 2011. The symposium had the theme “How Matter Matters: Objects, Artifacts and Materiality in Organization Studies”. We talked the day after Karen Barad had given the keynote “Ma(r)king Time: Material Entanglements and …
The ‘What Of’ and the ‘What If’ of Agential Realism – In Search of the Gendered Subject
The article explores Karen Barad’s theoretical framework, agential realism, to seek out theoretical perspectives that can be used as analytical approaches to empirical data. By selecting two pieces of data we aim to illustrate the analytical possibilities offered by this approach. The first piece of data stipulates an opening of ‘WHAT OF’ of the activities in a world of computer games: WHAT OF the myriad of real and virtual voices, sentiments and…
Resisting and committing to schooling
In Western countries, discourses concerning ‘boys failing school’ are circulated in media as well as in schools. Research is conducted that offers sweeping sociological, societal or biological explanations, or context‐sensitive ethnographic or social psychological and variable explanations on the relation between boys and school life. In this article the author outlines her research into boys in school, based on her empirical studies of subjectif…
Kropslig subjektivering
Hunting through poststructuralist feminist theories of the body, this article presents building blocks for a theory of bodily subjectification processes which works against generalising ideas and which prove useful for complex analytical investigations of how we become subjects in a bodily sense. The building blocks presented includes 1) Viewing the body as in a constant process of becoming). 2) Conceptualizing the body in intra-activity with oth…
