  • Using childhood landscape memories to uncover the dynamics of Anthropocene in African Urbanscapes

Open Access•Aliyu Salisu Barau, Halima Abdulkadir Idris et al.•ARTICLE•People and Nature•2026

This perspective provides a reflective account of our personal experiences as African professors and lecturers in diverse fields of environmental sciences encountering the urban Anthropocene. Here, we explain the nature of the unprecedented, potent and hidden changes in our lived environments. Such collective explanations are important in documenting the speed and scale of landscape change in the context of the Anthropocene. Africa, being the fas…

  • Justice for Resilient Development in Climate-Stressed Cities

Open Access•Diana Reckien, Sirkku Juhola et al.•BOOK•Justice for Resilient Development…•2025

Climate impacts and risk, within and across cities, are distributed highly unequally. Cities located in low latitudes are more vulnerable to climate risk and impacts than in high latitudes, due to the large proportion of informal settlements relative to the housing stock and more frequent extremes. According to EM-DAT, about 60% of environmental disasters in cities relate to riverine floods. Riverine floods and heatwaves cause about 33% of deaths…

  • Urban planning strategies for addressing climate change in Lagos megacity, Nigeria

  • Patterns and sustainability implications of emergent vertical urbanism in a traditional African city

  • Shifting forward: Urban ecology in perspective

    Open Access•Steward T A Pickett, Niki Frantzeskaki et al.•ARTICLE•AMBIO•2024•Cited by: 1•References: 52

The world has become urban; cities increasingly shape our worldviews, relation to other species, and the large-scale, long-term decisions we make. Cities are nature, but they need to align better with other ecosystems to avoid accelerating climate change and loss of biodiversity. We need a science to guide urban development across the diverse realities of global cities. This need can be met, in part, by shifts in urban ecology and its linkages to…

  • A transformative shift in urban ecology toward a more active and relevant future for the field and for cities

    Open Access•Niki Frantzeskaki, Daniel L Childers et al.•ARTICLE•AMBIO•2024•Cited by: 6•References: 107

This paper builds on the expansion of urban ecology from a biologically based discipline—ecology in the city—to an increasingly interdisciplinary field—ecology of the city—to a transdisciplinary, knowledge to action endeavor—an ecology for and with the city. We build on this “prepositional journey” by proposing a transformative shift in urban ecology, and we present a framework for how the field may continue this shift. We conceptualize that urba…

  • The relational shift in urban ecology: From place and structures to multiple modes of coproduction for positive urban futures

    Open Access•Steward T A Pickett, Abdoumaliq Simone et al.•ARTICLE•AMBIO•2024•Cited by: 5•References: 211

This perspective emerged from ongoing dialogue among ecologists initiated by a virtual workshop in 2021. A transdisciplinary group of researchers and practitioners conclude that urban ecology as a science can better contribute to positive futures by focusing on relationships, rather than prioritizing urban structures. Insights from other relational disciplines, such as political ecology, governance, urban design, and conservation also contribute.…

  • Transitioning to inclusive and nature-based decarbonisaton through recreating tree-based artisanal industries in Kano City, Nigeria

Aliyu Salisu Barau•ARTICLE•Norsk Geografisk Tidsskrift -…•2023

Nigeria is committed to achieving carbon neutrality by halving its emissions by 2050. It has adopted nature-based solutions to implement its decarbonisation agenda. Nevertheless, as a highly urbanised country, the roles of Nigerian cities, where most emissions are concentrated, have not been clearly outlined. Besides, the one-size-fits-all strategy hardly works for all cities, given their spatial, demographic, economic, social, and ecological dif…

  • Exploring the governance and politics of transformations towards sustainability

    Open Access•James Patterson, Karsten Schulz et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Innovation and…•2016•Cited by: 214•References: 17

The notion of 'transformations towards sustainability' takes an increasingly central position in global sustainability research and policy discourse in recent years. Governance and politics are central to understanding and analysing transformations towards sustainability. However, despite receiving growing attention in recent years, the governance and politics aspects of transformations remain arguably under-developed in the global sustainability…
