When you’re a star, they let you do it”
Since the 2008 US Presidential election, the salience of Twitter in political discourse has been apparent. Donald Trump revolutionized presidential communication through his use of Twitter by communicating to narrow audiences, which are difficult to reach with traditional communication channels. Although now back on the platform, his controversial tweets were subject to widespread scrutiny and eventually led to him being permanently banned from T…
On “Standard” Written English in the Later Middle Ages
This paper argues that it is time to set aside traditional teleological narratives about late medieval English standardization in favor of a different approach that accepts the distinctive functions—as well as forms—of the language during the period. Developments in the analysis of machine-readable corpora have enabled more robust conclusions to be drawn about the nature of these vocabularies, relating particular usages to particular confessional orientations. In this paper, part of a long-term research project on the history of English religious vocabulary, an attempt is made to identify “keywords” cha…

William Caxton, England’s first printer, published the first edition of his English Golden Legend in 1483–4. Caxton’s edition, a magnificent folio with many woodcuts, was a translation and conflation of three earlier texts: a twelfth-century Latin cycle of saints’ live s and materials appropriate for church feasts, and French and earlier English translations of the same work. But Caxton’s version was not only another translation, but also added n…
The Lay Folks' Mass Book’ and Thomas Frederick Simmons
Thomas Frederick Simmons (1815–84) combined his ecclesiastical duties and liturgical interests with editing the fourteenth-century Middle English Lay folks’ mass book (1879) for the Early English Text Society, with the aim of showing the continuity of the English Church from the medieval period through the Reformation. In the light of modern scholarship, this article recontextualises both medieval text and Simmons's own editorial practice, and sh…

This study presents stratigraphic, geomorphic, and paleoenvironmental (δ 13 C) data that provide insight into the late Pleistocene landscape evolution of the Cimarron River valley in the High Plains of southwestern Kansas. Two distinct valley fills (T-1 and T-2) were investigated. Three soils occur in the T-2 fill and five in the T-1 fill, all indicating periods of landscape stability or slow sedimentation. Of particular interest are two cumulic …
