(Hi)story‐Telling
The dilemma of the history of the defeated is certainly not a novel topic for political and historical enquiry. The experience of the unspeakable forced the Auschwitz generation to question the meaning of historical memory. Walter Benjamin posed this question very early on, when he wrote in 1940 that ‘The only historian capable of fanning the spark of hope in the past is the one who is firmly convinced that even the dead will not be safe from the…
From History‐writing to (Hi)story‐telling
The main aim of this article is to reconstruct the evolutions and the political implications of the Italian historical novel between the nineteenth and twenty‐first centuries. The starting hypothesis is that the historical novel has always performed a vicarious function with respect to traditional historiography. In the Italian case, in particular, the canon of the historical novel has progressively lost the apologetic function it had during the …
O objetivo principal deste ensaio é aplicar a grade teórica foucaultiana à situação pandêmica atual.
Memory in warfare
To what extent may we consider historical writing a field of political tension? Could we make a plausible conceptual distinction between a constituent and a destituent narrative? According to Carlo Ginzburg - one of the proponents of 'microhistory' - historical sources are 'distorting mirrors', which let the truth shine through in an indirect way. Consequently, the good historian is the one who manages to grasp the 'Freudian slips' of history and…
A (Conceptual) History of Violence
The article sketches a general history of the concept of violence, particularly focusing on the most significant turning points in western political thought. My main aim is to question the position according to which in western history violence has been progressively declining, in quantity and quality. My working hypothesis follows Michel Foucault's assumption in Discipline and Punish , according to which a modern society of control is based on t…
