  • Representation and its limits

    Open Access•Marko Simendić•ARTICLE•Sociologija•2022

The paper deals with the ways in which representatives (both Serbian government officials and opposition politicians) described the protest against the curfew in 2020 and its participants. From the perspective of the ?constructivist? turn in scholarship on representation, the paper branches into two main lines of enquiry: 1) what did the representatives say about the protests and the protesters; 2) how did they (re)define the represented and thei…

  • From “Brilliant study” to “One Woman’s outcry Against Her Nature”

    Open Access•Katarina Loncarevic, Marko Simendić•ARTICLE•Glasnik Etnografskog instituta•2022

Simone de Beauvoir?s The Second Sex has been considered as one of the most crucial books that influenced the second wave feminists, who mobilized during the 1960s and 1970s new massive feminist movement in America. This article analyses reception of the book in the American scientific/academic journals, and in that way, contributes to the field of periodical studies. This article, first, analyses post-war American context with the focus on status…

  • Cicero and hobbes on the person of the state

    Open Access•Marko Simendić•ARTICLE•Filozofija i drustvo•2022•References: 2

The importance of Thomas Hobbes?s account of personation and representation can hardly be overstated. And his intellectual debt to one of his classical foes, Marcus Tullius Cicero, can hardly be ignored. This paper compares Hobbes?s ideas on personhood of the state with Cicero?s notion of persona civitatis, and attempts to describe how Hobbes reshaped Cicero?s guidelines for (re)presenting legitimate authority into a prop for defending any effect…

  • Paternalistic means for antipaternalistic ends

    Open Access•Marko Simendić•ARTICLE•Sociologija•2021

In On Liberty John Stuart Mill defends individual liberty from any kind of interference that is not justified by self-protection. Paternalism, interfering in somebody?s liberty against his will in order to promote this person?s welfare, is forbidden by Mill?s ?one very simple principle?. However, numerous examples in other Mill?s works show that the famous utilitarian not only supports, but also suggests various paternalistic policies. In this pa…

  • Verita effettuale della cosa politica u Makijavelijevoj Mandragoli

  • Nature, civility and eschatology

    Open Access•Marko Simendić•ARTICLE•Filozofija i drustvo•2016•Cited by: 1•References: 2

This paper argues that Thomas Hobbes?s theory contains an account of progressive defragmentation and unification of power, accompanied by the progression in human reasoning capacities. If the consequence of human nature is abandonment of natural condition and subjection to a sovereign, then similar principles should apply to the sovereigns themselves, since Hobbes sees them as continuing to exist in the state of nature. In turn, the relations bet…

  • Thomas Hobbes's Person as Persona and ‘Intelligent Substance’

    Marko Simendić•ARTICLE•Intellectual History Review•2012•Cited by: 4

Although in The Elements of Law Thomas Hobbes used the word ‘person’ to denote a ‘person civill’,1 it was not until the English Leviathan that he introduced his definition of a person. In his subse
