Slow(er) Pedagogy as Pandemic Panacea
"Slow(er) Pedagogy as Pandemic Panacea." SCHOLE: A Journal of Leisure Studies and Recreation Education, ahead-of-print(ahead-of-print), pp. 1–2
Long-term impacts of two secondary school environmental studies programs on environmental behaviour
A survey of alumni of two longstanding interdisciplinary secondary school environmental studies programs revealed that the vast majority of alumni reported being engaged in pro-environmental behaviours, which they attributed to participation in the programs five to twenty-three years prior. That finding in itself is worth sharing. Digging deeper, however, revealed that most reported behaviours were in the private rather than public sphere. Women …
Slow nature-focused leisure in the days of Covid-19
This paper offers a tri-fold contribution. The original intent for this special issue paper was an investigation into outdoor recreational experiences that place 'nature' at the forefront of the activity, including Shinrin-Yoku (Forest Bathing); Friluftsliv; Uitwaaien; Gökotta; and Green-Care Farming. These nature-first approaches exemplify 'slow' leisure, offering a counter-narrative to highly structured and overly-engineered outdoor experiences…
John Dewey
In this chapter, John Dewey’s views on labour and leisure are introduced with/in the backdrop of Key West, Florida, where Dewey himself spent much of his leisure time. Dewey’s use of the terms “activity” and “experience” as components of present day experiential education theory are examined. The concepts of “play” and “unification” are explored as aspects of Dewey’s broader educational philosophy. The chapter culminates with consideration of how…
Experientially Learning and Teaching in a Student-Directed Classroom
There exists a relatively coherent body of research relevant to problem-based and transformational learning but too few studies that have empirically explored the many anecdotal claims of the attributes of experiential, student-directed pedagogy. The purpose of this present study was to explore students' and professor experiences with/in a student-directed experiential education elective course. What successes and challenges do students and the p…
The impact of integrated environmental studies programs
In Canada, there exists a noteworthy educational initiative referred to as Environmental Studies Programs (ESPs). These secondary school programs are interdisciplinary, helping to link subject matter and encouraging student responsibility. The results of two case studies of Ontario ESPs that analyze the impact of ESP participation on students' attitudes to, and relationships with, the environment and the extent to which program participation info…
The Impact of Outdoor Pursuits on College Students' Perceived Sense of Community
A primary purpose of one form of leisure experience—outdoor pursuits programs—is the development of positive interpersonal relationships and group experiences that lead to enhanced sense of community. However, there is a distinct lack of research related to psychological sense of community and involvement with nature. The purpose of this study was to understand the relationship between college students' participation in outdoor pursuits trips and…
Teaching For and About Critical Pedagogy in the Post-Secondary Classroom
While there is a body of literature that considers the theory of critical pedagogy, there is significantly less literature that specifically addresses the ways in which professors attempt to apply this theory in practice. This paper presents the results from a study that was designed, in part, to address this gap. Seventeen self-identified critical pedagogues participated in this qualitative research study. Participants reported their use of the …
Sustaining environmental pedagogy in times of educational conservatism
Although the global call for environmental education is persistent, on a local or regional level, this call can be confronted by educational policies that drive environmental education out of the curriculum. This paper reports on a qualitative case study of the factors contributing to the sustainability of three teacher‐driven integrated curriculum programs (ICPs). Four key factors were identified: financial self‐sufficiency and physical isolatio…
