  • Women With Ovulatory Cycles Have Longer Sleep, but Phases of Their Menstrual Cycles Do Not Differ in Sleep Characteristics

Open Access•Aleksandra Wachowicz, Andrzej Galbarczyk et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Human Biology•2026

The findings suggest that ovulatory status might be associated with differences in total sleep time and REM sleep duration, whereas sleep duration and sleep stage distribution across menstrual cycle phases remain relatively constant. These results suggest that the presence of ovulation, rather than phase-specific changes during the cycle, may play a more important role in shaping sleep characteristics

  • Variations in Physical Activity Across the Menstrual Cycle in Healthy Women

Open Access•Sude Ozdemir, Andrzej Galbarczyk et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Human Biology•2026

Step count and total active time peaks in the follicular phase and declines during the premenstrual phase. Our study highlights the importance of accurately identifying phases of the menstrual cycle and analyzing various activity intensities for understanding physical activity behavior across the menstrual cycle

  • Decrease in reproductive desires among non-parent heterosexual women during the Covid-19 pandemic in Poland

Open Access•Urszula M Marcinkowska, Krzysztof Kasparek et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2025

Introduction Deterioration of economic conditions, societal uncertainty, and negative expectations about the future have all been linked to delayed childbearing plans. All these negative circumstances can be related to epidemiological stress, which in turn becomes one of the culprits for changes in fertility plans. This study aims to analyze the individual factors that decrease the probability of wanting to have children after exposure to epidemi…

  • Antenatal Classes in the Context of Prenatal Anxiety and Depression during the Covid-19 Pandemic

Open Access•Aleksandra Ciochoń, Anna Apanasewicz et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2022

Perinatal maternal anxiety and depression negatively affect intrauterine fetal development, birth outcome, breastfeeding initiation, duration, and milk composition. Antenatal classes potentially reduce the anxiety of pregnant women and may thus contribute to healthy infant development. The study investigates the relationship between participation in online or in-person antenatal classes and levels of anxiety and depression in Polish women during …

  • Hormonal Underpinnings of the Variation in Sexual Desire, Arousal and Activity Throughout the Menstrual Cycle – A Multifaceted Approach

    Open Access•Urszula M Marcinkowska, Talia N Shirazi et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Sex Research•2022•Cited by: 1•References: 1

Although prior evidence supports women's mating behaviors and preferences being related to ovarian hormonal levels, there is conflicting evidence about exactly which hormones predict sexual function best, which specific psychosexual facets are affected and how between-individual and within-individual differences relate to this question. In this study levels of estradiol and progesterone were measured (once daily for 15 days for each participant) …

  • Variation in sociosexuality across natural menstrual cycles

Open Access•Urszula M Marcinkowska, Magdalena Mijas et al.•ARTICLE•Evolution and Human Behavior•2021

  • Assessing the evidentiary value of secondary data analyses

Open Access•Bartlett C Jones, Benedict Christopher Jones et al.•ARTICLE•Evolution and Human Behavior•2019

  • Association between sexual orientations of individuals and perceptions of tattooed men

Andrzej Galbarczyk, Magdalena Mijas et al.•ARTICLE•Psychology and Sexuality•2019•References: 6

We present the results of the first study exploring whether perceptions of tattooed men may be influenced by sexual orientation. We asked heterosexual women (n = 2,436) and men (n = 230), and lesbian women (n = 50) and gay men (n = 60) to rate nine photos of male models with the provisos that at least one image had a digitally added tattoo and participants would not evaluate the same model in both tattooed and non-tattooed versions. Heterosexual …

  • Relational mobility predicts social behaviors in 39 countries and is tied to historical farming and threat

Open Access•Robert Thomson, M Yuki et al.•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the National…•2018

Significance Biologists and social scientists have long tried to understand why some societies have more fluid and open interpersonal relationships—differences in relational mobility—and how those differences influence individual behaviors. We measure relational mobility in 39 societies and find that relationships are more stable and hard to form in east Asia, North Africa, and the Middle East, while they are more fluid in the West and Latin Amer…

  • Costs of reproduction are reflected in women's faces

    Open Access•Urszula M Marcinkowska, Anthony C Little et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•2018•Cited by: 1•References: 24

OBJECTIVES: The costs associated with reproduction (i.e., gestation, lactation, childcare) have long-term negative consequences by elevating risk of disease and reducing lifespan. We tested the hypotheses that high parity, and thus high reproductive costs bear by women, is perceived by other people when they evaluate facial appearance of health, attractiveness and age of mothers. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Using computer software we created average f…

  • Women's reproductive success and the preference for Dark Triad in men's faces

  • Female Mate Choice

  • Men’s Preferences for Female Facial Femininity Decline With Age

    Urszula M Marcinkowska, Barnaby J Dixson et al.•ARTICLE•The Journals of Gerontology…•2015•Cited by: 1•References: 6

Our study shows that men's preferences for facial femininity are age dependent. At the proximate level, differences in preferences could reflect age-related declines in testosterone levels. These age-related declines in preferences could benefit older men, who are less able to invest in mating effort, and thus may opt out of competition with younger men for mates with potentially higher fertility
