Cultural Crisis and Danny Reveco
In December 2023, the Valparaíso-based artist, Danny Reveco, opened his exhibition, 'Language Is Not Sufficient'. A month later, it was the catalyst of a cultural crisis when it was argued that Reveco's works were criminal acts. I recommend that Reveco was principally concerned with how the Chilean State interpellates residents in the national territory according to the 'good behaviour' of a proper citizen. Those who do not fulfil that good behav…
Anecdote, fiction, and statistics
This article clarifies the role and value of three types of evidence used in empirical research – anecdotes derived from case studies or small samples of data, fictions (including both thought experiments and works of art such as novels and plays) and statistics. The conclusion is that all three have an important part to play. Many conventional stereotypes are deeply unhelpful: contrary to the usual assumptions, science is often dependent on anec…
Narrative, the Chilean social explosion, and affective geography
In response to State violence during the so-called ‘Chilean social explosion’ [ estallido social], the Valparaíso Coordinator of Cultural Action [ Coordinadora acción cultural Valparaíso] (CAC) in collaboration with other cultural groups of Valparaíso as well as other artists who spontaneously improvised during the performance organized on 31 October 2019 an ‘artistic candlelight vigil for human rights’ that passed through the center of the Chile…
Spaces of exposure
Developing thoughts on exposure in cultural geography, literary studies, and mobilities research, this article aims to provide a more comprehensive account towards the publicness of public space. What would happen if we assessed publicness not by degrees of openness and inclusion, but through the nexus of vulnerability and complicity that is fundamental to the notion of exposure? To grasp such an intrinsic dualism, our perspective goes towards pu…
Punk urbanism
This article argues that punk urbanism is best understood as the attempt to paradoxically conceive of and organize cities as unorganizable, contested, and heterogeneous spaces; the consolidation of a stable and coherent urban community is challenged within punk urbanism by the constant disruption of any identifiable and stable urban meaning. More precisely, sections of London punk in the 1970s revealed that a cultural geography based around a coh…
Decoloniality, communality, and anti-semitism
Although Latin American decolonial thinking has always maintained an interest in taking the theories and practices of the communities of Latin America's colonized peoples seriously, the theorization of communality and communal systems has been a new focus of the last two decades. That is, the academic decolonial dedication to diversity and difference has recently been imagined as a pluriverse of communal systems. As such, this decolonial group of…
Hospitality; or, A Critique of Un/Inhabitability
Recent criticisms of regionalization and urbanization in the Anthropocene have argued that actors are increasingly producing uninhabitable spaces, in which oppressed and marginalized groups are either left to die or forced into a rootless existence of constant displacement. Through an examination of the cultural politics of current discussions of uninhabitability in the Anthropocene, this article argues against the logic of un/inhabitability—demo…

Drug-using men who have sex with men
Men who have sex with men (MSM) and use drugs are at high risk for HIV. This study assessed drug and sex-related risk behaviours and sexual identities for MSM drug injectors and crack smokers. One hundred and forty four MSM drug injectors and crack smokers from five USA cities were interviewed. One-third of the men were current injectors, twice as many reported lifetime injection. Most (56%) reported sex with women in the prior year; sex trading …
Essay. Religious studies as critical organic intellectual practice
In this essay I argue that those who write and teach about religion within higher education can make vital contributions to struggles for social justice, ecological integrity, and human rights. In order to make such contributions scholars must, however, break with both corporate multicul-turalism, which reduces struggles over how we should live to matters of style, and methods of interpretation that remove the study of religion from the social co…

Rethinking Elites
Recent years have witnessed a revival of interest in researching elite groups; however the term 'elite' has remained largely untheorised and unproblematised in much of the resulting literature. I attempt to question what is meant by the term 'elite', how the term may be given a deeper conceptual relevance, and what the consequences of this might be for the study of elites. Through a critical review of conventional elite theory, and a discussion o…
