Compulsory admissions, mechanical restraints and staff attitudes toward coercion in a sample of psychiatric wards in Italy
The transition towards community-based mental health care in the European Union
Allocation of Users of Mental Health Services to Needs-Based Care Clusters
In Italy, despite strong community-based mental health services, needs assessment is unsatisfactory. Using the Mental Health Clustering Tool (MHCT) we adopted a multidimensional and non-diagnosis dependent approach to assign mental health services users with similar needs to groups corresponding to resources required for effective care. We tested the MHCT in nine Departments of Mental Health in four Italian regions. After a brief training, 318 pr…
From contact coverage to effective coverage of community care for patients with severe mental disorders
This study ascertained the gap between contact and effective coverage of MHC and showed that administrative data can usefully contribute to assess the effectiveness of a mental health system
Implementation of Psychodynamic Multifamily Groups for Severe Mental Illness
Background: Among Family-Based Services for the treatment of severe mental illnesses, multi-family models gained particular attention, given the potential usefulness of mutual feed-back, motivation and encouragement among families. Methods: The Psychodynamic Multi-Family Group Model has been proposed since 1997 in some Community Mental Health Services in Rome. Since 2011 multifamily groups are held weekly in all the six Districts of the Departmen…
Individual Health Budgets in Mental Health
IHB was used in patients with severe clinical and social problems. More resources, however, may be aimed at the working and social axes. More research is needed to better assess clinical and social outcomes of IHB and to adjust their intensity in a longitudinal perspective in order to enhance cost-effectiveness
Opportunities, challenges and learnings from qualitative research with stakeholders in frailty in three European countries
The aims of this paper are to reflect upon the experiences of researchers involved in a cross-national qualitative study with stakeholders in three European countries (Italy, Poland and UK), within the context of the FOCUS project on frailty management and optimisation (see http://focus-aha.eu/en/home). Six researchers’ reflections were gathered using open-ended questions. Responses were thematically analysed. We report on our team diversity incl…

Understanding frailty
Innovative methods to manage frailty are critical to managing the needs of an ageing population. Evidence suggests there are opportunities to reverse or prevent frailty through early intervention. However, little is known about older adults’, families’ and practitioners’ beliefs about the malleability of frailty. This study examined European stakeholders’ accounts of the acceptability and feasibility of frailty screening and prevention to inform …

Community residential facilities in mental health services
Do people with bipolar disorders have access to psychosocial treatments? A survey in Italy
BACKGROUND: Several guidelines consider psychosocial treatments an essential component of clinical management of bipolar disorders in addition to drug therapy. However, to what extent such interventions are available in everyday practice to the average patient attending mental health services is not known. AIMS: This study aims to investigate access of people with bipolar disorders to psychosocial treatments in a community-based care system. METH…

Discharges of patients from public psychiatric hospitals in Italy between 1994 and 2000
Discharges of Patients from Public Psychiatric Hospitals in Italy between 1994 and 2000
Background: Psychiatric hospitals in Italy had to be closed under a law dated 1994. Aims: To investigate the discharge of patients from public psychiatric hospitals. Methods: A total of 4492 patients from 22 psychiatric hospitals were described at recruitment and followed during the period 1994-2000. Their characteristics were investigated as determinants of discharge to community residential facilities for psychiatric patients versus other setti…
The Qualyop Project 1
Objectives Monitoring and evaluating the Italian psychiatric hospitals closure process, stated by the law to be concluded by 31 December 1996, and then postponed to 31 March 1998, identifying characteristics related to the possibility of discharge in 4493 patients living in twentytwo public psychiatric hospitals. Method Sociodemographic and clinical data, information on impairment and functioning and plans for discharge in the subsequent twelve m…

change in workload at the perigee, there was a reduction in out of hours calls at the apogee, when the moon's gravitational pull is at its lowest. Further analysis showed that any apparent effect could be explained by the occurrence of more bank holidays on the full moon days in our study period. Though the reduction in workload at the apogee remained significant (p = 0 032)
Acute myocardial infarction
STUDY OBJECTIVE--The study aimed to investigate the relationship between years since stopping smoking and the risk of acute myocardial infarction. DESIGN--This was a hospital based, multicentre, case-control study conducted in Italy between September 1988 and June 1989 within the framework of the GISSI-2 clinical trial. SETTING--Over 80 coronary care units in various Italian regions participated. SUBJECTS--A total of 916 incident cases of acute m…

Marital status, indicators of sexual activity and prostatic cancer
STUDY OBJECTIVE--To analyse the relationship between marital status, indicators of sexual activity, history of urological and venereal diseases, and the risk of prostatic cancer. DESIGN--Case-control study. SETTING--A network of cooperating hospitals from northern Italy. PARTICIPANTS--A total of 271 patients with histologically confirmed prostatic cancer and 685 controls in hospital because of acute, non-neoplastic, non-genital or urological cond…
Oral contraceptives and non-contraceptive oestrogens in the risk of gallstone disease requiring surgery
STUDY OBJECTIVE--The aim was to investigate the relationship between oral contraceptives, non-contraceptive oestrogens, and the risk of gallstone disease requiring surgery. DESIGN--This was a hospital based case-control study carried out between 1987 and 1990. Main outcome measures were frequency of consumption of oral contraceptives and non-contraceptive oestrogens, and the corresponding multivariate relative risk estimates and 95% confidence in…
Smoking and myocardial infarction in women
STUDY OBJECTIVE: To examine the relationship between smoking and myocardial infarction in women. DESIGN: Case-control study over 5 years. SETTING: Cases were women admitted to 30 coronary care units in northern Italy. Controls were admitted to the same hospitals with other acute disorders. PARTICIPANTS: These were 262 young and middle aged women with acute myocardial infarction (median age 49 years, range 24-69) and 519 controls with other acute …
