Open Access•Basil Mathews, Kausar Parvin et al.•ARTICLE•SSM - Mental Health•2026

Online child sexual victimization (OCSV) is increasingly prevalent, but little evidence exists about associated health outcomes. This study investigates whether two types of OCSV – nonconsensual sharing of sexual images, and sexual solicitation by an adult – are associated with health risk behaviours and mental disorders. This study analyzed data from the Australian Child Maltreatment Study (ACMS), a nationally representative cross-sectional surv…

    Open Access•John G Scott•ARTICLE•Journal of Child Psychology and…•2025

The spectrum of psychosis is highly relevant to child and adolescent mental health. Psychotic symptoms are common in children and adolescents. The onset of psychotic disorders is often preceded by neurodevelopmental problems in early childhood, and some 13% of adolescents attending specialist mental health services will later be diagnosed with a psychotic disorder or bipolar disorder. Although 12% of psychotic disorders and 8% of schizophrenia ca…

  • The Interpersonal Antecedents of Attachment Security in Early Adulthood

    Open Access•Julie A Blake, John G Scott et al.•ARTICLE•Children•2025

Background/Objectives : The relevance of adult attachment security for physical and emotional wellbeing is increasingly evident. Developing a better understanding of the interpersonal antecedents of secure attachment in childhood and adolescence could enable opportunities for its promotion when attachment styles are more easily modifiable. Methods : Data from 3648 participants in a longitudinal birth cohort study were examined. At 21 years, parti…

Open Access•Divna M Haslam, Eva Malacova et al.•ARTICLE•Australian Journal of Social Issues•2024•Cited by: 3•References: 66

Corporal punishment is associated with adverse outcomes; however, little empirical data exists about the state of corporal punishment in Australia. This paper presents the first national prevalence estimates of experiences of corporal punishment during childhood among Australians and its use as adults by Australian parents and caregivers. We also report community beliefs about the necessity of corporal punishment. Results show corporal punishment…

  • Peripheral voices: Women in international trade scholarship

    Open Access•Valbona Muzaka, John G Scott et al.•ARTICLE•International Affairs•2024•References: 2

We ask how women are faring in the field of international trade both as knowledge producers and as policy-makers, with a focus on the former. This is an important question in light of the increased, if belated, attention paid to the gendered impact of international trade rules and of the gendered nature of academia. Using article publishing as a proxy for international trade scholarship, we create a unique dataset consisting of trade-related arti…

Open Access•Marian Sarala, Jouko Miettunen et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Adolescence•2022

INTRODUCTION: Peer victimization and aggression in adolescence are associated with later mental health morbidity. However, studies examining this association have not controlled for adolescent substance use. We aimed to study the associations between peer victimization, peer aggression, and mental disorders in adulthood, adjusting for substance use in adolescence. METHODS: Participants were from the prospective Northern Finland Birth Cohort 1986.…

  • Do cannabis and amphetamine use in adolescence predict adult life success: A longitudinal study

    J M Najman, David P Farrington et al.•ARTICLE•Addiction Research & Theory•2022

Background While some studies have reported that early age of onset of cannabis and amphetamine use predicts a range of adverse outcomes, these findings are rarely adjusted for other predictors of adverse outcomes or subsequent drug use over the adult life course. These studies have not addressed the possibility that it is subsequent rather than early age of onset of drug use that may predict adult life success. Methods Data are from the Mater-Uni…

  • Contemporary Capitalism and the Distribution of Power in Society

John G Scott, John Scott•CHAPTER•Oxford Handbook of Max Weber•2019

This article examines Weber’s partial and fragmentary discussions of power and domination. It reconstructs a basis for Weber’s argument through introducing ideas of persuasive and coercive influence and shows how Weber examined these forms of power in structures of class and status and in views of state authority and patterns of domination in economic markets. It is shown that the Weberian conceptualization can illuminate many ongoing debates in …

This paper reports on the development of social network analysis, tracing its origins in classical sociology and its more recent formulation in social scientific and mathematical work. It is argued that the concept of social network provides a powerful model for social structure, and that a number of important formal methods of social network analysis can be discerned. Social network analysis has been used in studies of kinship structure, social …

Following the procedures of the National Health and Social Life Survey, from which the sexual‐moral attitude items were obtained, we conducted a cluster analysis to create attitudinal groupings. We obtained four clusters representing various nuances of liberalism and conservatism. When c…

    Open Access•John G Scott, John Scott et al.•ARTICLE•Sociology•1980•Cited by: 4•References: 12

This paper presents a conceptual model of the business system in terms of its two constituent parts: the exchange network and the communication network. This model is applied to the Scottish economy and an analysis of the Scottish business system is given. It is argued that whilst Scottish capital is predominantly owned by English interests, the network of interlocking directorships shows the relative autonomy of Scottish business within the Brit…

Gustavsen's analysis of Nor way and Sweden is compared with time-series data for Scotland from 1906 to 1973. The trend in the figures seems to contradict Gustavsen's argu ment, since the overall level of interlocking has decreased whilst the complexity of the environme…

    Open Access•Hannah J Thomas, Jason P Connor et al.•ARTICLE•Aggressive Behavior•2017•Cited by: 3•References: 30

Bullying is defined as repeated negative actions involving a power differential, and intention to harm. There is limited research on harmful intention as a definitional component. This study explored the role of the perpetrator's harmful intention and the target's perception of harmful intention. Some 209 students (M = 14.5 years; 66.5% female) and 447 parents (M = 46.4 years; 86.4% female) were randomly assigned in an online survey. Participants…

    Open Access•John G Scott, John Scott et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Sociology•2017•Cited by: 1•References: 42

The distribution of cannabis in Australia is examined with reference to motivations for supplying drugs. We argue that the distribution of cannabis in Australia is best understood with reference to the concept of social supply, where a supplier, not considered to be a 'drug dealer proper', brokers, facilitates or sells drugs, for little or no financial gain to friends and acquaintances. The article draws on data from surveys and interviews with 2…

Normal social development in the puppy can be divided into several periods based on changes in social relationships. Several of these may be critical, but the most important is that of primary socialization, beginn…

    Open Access•J P Scott, John G Scott•ARTICLE•Aggressive Behavior•1975•References: 23

This paper reviews the evidence that social disaggregation is a major cause of destructive violence in non-human animal societies. The multifactorial theory of agonistic behavior is modified into a polysystemic theory which relates factors on each level to each other in an integrated model. As a result, it is suggested that disaggregation of systems on any level may lead to maladaptive violence. On theoretical grounds it is concluded that disaggr…
