Worldwide burden of cancer attributable to HPV by site, country and HPV type
HPV is the cause of almost all cervical cancer and is responsible for a substantial fraction of other anogenital cancers and oropharyngeal cancers. Understanding the HPV‐attributable cancer burden can boost programs of HPV vaccination and HPV‐based cervical screening. Attributable fractions (AFs) and the relative contributions of different HPV types were derived from published studies reporting on the prevalence of transforming HPV infection in c…

Mediterranean diet in relation to body mass index and waist-to-hip ratio
Objective The Mediterranean diet is rich in fat and starch, and hence may be related to overweight. We therefore investigated the relationship between adherence to a Mediterranean diet and body mass index (BMI) and waist-to-hip ratio (WHR). Design and setting Data were obtained from the control group of a network of case–control studies on cancer conducted in major teaching and general hospitals in four Italian areas between 1991 and 2002. An int…
Lipid, protein and carbohydrate intake in relation to body mass index
Objective To analyse the association between macronutrient intake and body mass index (BMI). Design A series of hospital-based case–control studies. Settings Selected teaching and general hospitals in several Italian regions. Subjects A total of 6619 subjects from the comparison groups of the case–control studies were included in the analysis. Methods We obtained data from a validated 78-item food-frequency questionnaire submitted between 1991 an…
Access to gynecological services and Papanicolau tests in HIV-infected Italian women
The objective of the study was to evaluate the access to Papanicolau (Pap) tests of HIV-infected women in Italy. A cross-sectional survey on a cohort of HIV-infected women seen at 27 HIV clinics was performed. At each clinic a female physician involved in the care of HIV-infected women was asked questions on clinic and patients' characteristics and on access to Pap tests. Menopause, menstrual and reproductive history, and bone density in northern Italy
STUDY OBJECTIVE: To analyse the relationship between menstrual and reproductive factors and the risk of low bone mineral density (BMD). DESIGN: This was a population based screening programme carried out between 1991 and 1993 among 1373 perimenopausal women in northern Italy by means of dual photon absorptiometry at the lumbar spine. MAIN RESULTS: BMD was strongly related to the age at menopause. In comparison with women reporting menopause below…

The classification of Aids cases
This study assessed the concordance between the transmission classification of 725 acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) cases by the Italian AIDS Registry (the national surveillance system) and the classification of the same cases by the Italian Cooperative Group on AIDS-Related Tumors. A high degree of concordance emerged for intravenous drug users in both sexes (kappa = 0.88; 95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.84, 0.92), for homosexual men (…

change in workload at the perigee, there was a reduction in out of hours calls at the apogee, when the moon's gravitational pull is at its lowest. Further analysis showed that any apparent effect could be explained by the occurrence of more bank holidays on the full moon days in our study period. Though the reduction in workload at the apogee remained significant (p = 0 032)
Alcohol consumption and the risk of acute myocardial infarction in women
STUDY OBJECTIVE--To investigate the relationship between alcohol consumption and the risk of acute myocardial infarction in women. DESIGN--This was a hospital based, case-control study carried out between 1983 and 1990. Main outcome measures were average daily number of drinks of various alcoholic beverages consumed and corresponding multivariate relative risk estimates and 95% confidence intervals (CI). SETTING--A network including major teachin…
Marital status, indicators of sexual activity and prostatic cancer
STUDY OBJECTIVE--To analyse the relationship between marital status, indicators of sexual activity, history of urological and venereal diseases, and the risk of prostatic cancer. DESIGN--Case-control study. SETTING--A network of cooperating hospitals from northern Italy. PARTICIPANTS--A total of 271 patients with histologically confirmed prostatic cancer and 685 controls in hospital because of acute, non-neoplastic, non-genital or urological cond…
Oral contraceptives and non-contraceptive oestrogens in the risk of gallstone disease requiring surgery
STUDY OBJECTIVE--The aim was to investigate the relationship between oral contraceptives, non-contraceptive oestrogens, and the risk of gallstone disease requiring surgery. DESIGN--This was a hospital based case-control study carried out between 1987 and 1990. Main outcome measures were frequency of consumption of oral contraceptives and non-contraceptive oestrogens, and the corresponding multivariate relative risk estimates and 95% confidence in…
