  • Internet Control and Disinformation Across Regime Types During and After the Covid‐19 Crisis

    Open Access•Marianne Kneuer, Wolf J Schünemann et al.•ARTICLE•Politics and Governance•2024•Cited by: 1•References: 14

The unprecedented scale of mitigation measures taken by governments during the Covid-19 pandemic raised concerns about if and to what extent democracy would be affected. Empirical accounts show that media freedom was the most vulnerable. This article concentrates on interference in digital media, as attacks on the digital realm during the pandemic were particularly harmful given that media activity moved from print to online all over the world. T…

  • Leveraging Dynamic Heterogeneous Networks to Study Transnational Issue Publics. The Case of the European Covid-19 Discourse on Twitter

    Open Access•Wolf J Schünemann, Alexander Brand et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Sociology•2022•References: 19

The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic constitutes a critical phase for the transnationalization of public spheres. Against this backdrop, we ask how transnational COVID-19 related online discourse has been throughout the EU over the first year of the pandemic. Which events triggered higher transnational coherence or national structuration of this specific issue public on Twitter? In order to study these questions, we rely on Twitter data obtained from th…

  • Aufwärtskompatibel? Zur Bedeutung struktureller und doktrinärer Nationalismen für die digitale Konstellation

    Open Access•Wolf J Schünemann•ARTICLE•Zeitschrift für Politikwissenschaft•2022•Cited by: 2•References: 38

  • Ready for the World? Measuring the (Trans-)National Quality of Political Issue Publics on Twitter

    Open Access•Wolf J Schünemann•ARTICLE•Media and Communication•2020

This article presents a multi-method research design for measuring the (trans-)national quality of issue publics on Twitter. Online communication is widely perceived as having the potential to overcome nationally bound public spheres. Social media, in particular, are seen as platforms and drivers of transnational communication through which users can easily connect across borders. Transnational interactivity can be expected in particular for poli…

  • The Ongoing Transformation of the Digital Public Sphere: Basic Considerations on a Moving Target

Open Access•Emiliana De Blasio, Marianne Kneuer et al.•ARTICLE•Media and Communication•2020

The recent decades more than anything else have revealed the ambivalence not only of the articulated expectations about the digital public sphere but also of the ‘real’ development itself. This thematic issue of Media and Communication highlights some of the criticalities and specificities of the evolution of the public sphere during this period where digital communication ecosystems are becoming increasingly central. The different articles offer…

  • Towards a ‘gold standard for the world’? The European General Data Protection Regulation between supranational and national norm entrepreneurship

    Wolf J Schünemann, Jana Windwehr•ARTICLE•Journal of European Integration•2020•Cited by: 5•References: 12

Traditionally, Europe stands out as the region where data protection regulation is strongest throughout the world. With its General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), the European Union in 2016 updated its claim for leadership in this policy realm by adopting measures which better meet the challenges of digitalisation. The main interest of this paper is whether three intensely debated emerging norms in the regulation have been driven by the supra…

  • Going transnational? Candidates’ transnational linkages on Twitter during the 2019 European Parliament elections

Sebastian Stier, Caterina Froio et al.•ARTICLE•West European Politics•2020•Cited by: 16•References: 26

How transnational are European Parliament (EP) campaigns? Building on research on the European public sphere and the politicisation of the EU, this study investigates to what extent the 2019 EP campaign was transnational and which factors were associated with ‘going transnational’. It conceptualises Twitter linkages of EP candidates as constitutive elements of a transnational campaign arena distinguishing interactions with EP candidates from othe…

  • EU critique beyond Euroscepticism and progressive stories: Introduction to the special issue

    Open Access•Wolf J Schünemann, Marlon Barbehön•ARTICLE•Culture Practice & Europeanization•2019•Cited by: 1•References: 17

Critical stances towards the EU have long been marginalized. In the political realm, they have been, and still frequently are, depicted as the business of "Eurosceptics" who are fundamentally questioning an established normative consensus. In the academic realm, integration theory somewhat similarly builds on "stories of progress" which construct a simplistic and largely uncritical history of European integration. In this introduction to the spec…

  • Outrage without Consequences? Post-Snowden Discourses and Governmental Practice in Germany

Open Access•Stefan Steiger, Wolf J Schünemann et al.•ARTICLE•Media and Communication•2017

In 2013 Edward Snowden’s disclosures of mass surveillance performed by US intelligence agencies seriously irritated politicians and citizens around the globe. This holds particularly true for privacy-sensitive communities in Germany. However, while the public was outraged, intelligence and security cooperation between the United States and Germany has been marked by continuity instead of disruption. The rather insubstantial debate over a so-calle…

  • Of activists and gatekeepers: Temporal and structural properties of policy networks on Twitter

    Open Access•Sebastian Stier, Wolf J Schünemann et al.•ARTICLE•New Media & Society•2017•Cited by: 17•References: 9

There is an ongoing academic debate whether social media empowers activists and advocacy groups in relation to established political actors and media gatekeepers. This article investigates these premises by analysing the influence of various actors in two policy debates on Twitter, environmental policy (climate change) and Internet governance (net neutrality). We extract tweets on both topics and code the respective 500 most central accounts acco…

  • Almost the same stories: Narrative patterns in EU treaty referendums

    Wolf J Schünemann•ARTICLE•National Identities•2017•Cited by: 4•References: 8

The article analyses narratives that favoured or opposed European integration in three referendum debates held during the constitutional process of the 2000s: in France and the Netherlands in 2005 (Constitutional Treaty) as well as the first vote in Ireland on the Lisbon Treaty in 2008. In all debates examined, speakers used similar narratives of European integration. While most narrative patterns have transnational character, however, they are a…

    Wolf J Schünemann, Nigel Boyle•ARTICLE•Sozialer Fortschritt•2011
