  • Impact of a Comprehensive and Flexible Intervention for Students With Disabilities Experiencing Intensive Literacy Needs

Open Access•Gregory J Benner, Keith Smolkowski et al.•ARTICLE•Remedial and Special Education•2026

Students with disabilities who experience significant early literacy challenges need structured reading instruction. This study documents the initial efficacy of Friends on the Block ( www.friendsontheblock.com ), a comprehensive and flexible program designed for students with intensive early literacy needs. Elementary-age students with disabilities and intensive early literacy needs, including those with intellectual and developmental disabiliti…

  • Promoting Agency Among Upper Elementary School Teachers and Students with an Artificial Intelligence Machine Learning System to Score Performance-Based Science Assessments

    Open Access•Fatima Elvira Terrazas-Arellanes, Lisa A Strycker et al.•ARTICLE•Education Sciences•2025

As schools increasingly adopt multidimensional, phenomenon-based, digital-technology-enhanced science instruction, a concurrent shift is occurring in student performance assessment. Assessment instruments capable of measuring multiple dimensions must incorporate constructed responses to probe students’ ability to explain scientific phenomena and solve problems. Such assessments, unlike traditional multiple-choice tests, are time-consuming and lab…

  • Associations between childhood trauma, perceived resilience, and teacher burnout

Gregory J Benner, Lisa A Strycker et al.•ARTICLE•Teachers and Teaching•2023

This study investigates how teacher burnout symptoms can be explained by childhood trauma and perceived resilience. Self-assessment surveys, designed to measure adverse childhood experiences, ability to bounce back after hardship, and burnout symptoms, were completed by 146 kindergarten through 12th-grade U. S. public school teachers. Structural equation modelling analysis revealed a significant indirect relationship between burnout symptoms and …

  • Teaching self‐management strategies to upper‐elementary students

Open Access•Keith Smolkowski, Brion Marquez et al.•ARTICLE•Psychology in the Schools•2023

Student behavior problems in general‐education classrooms present a major barrier to effective teaching. Behavior challenges, such as disruptions, noncompliance, and peer conflicts, reduce instructional time, whereas prosocial behaviors, such as paying attention, being ready to work, asking for help, participating in class, and completing homework, improve academic performance. Most interventions developed to address student behavior problems wer…

  • Evidence of efficacy of the Integrated Literacy Study Group professional learning program to enhance reading instruction for students with emotional and behavioral disorders

    Open Access•Gregory J Benner, Marissa J Filderman et al.•ARTICLE•Psychology in the Schools•2023

This article reports on a pilot study of the Integrated Literacy Study Group , a digitally delivered professional learning intervention to prepare elementary school teachers to provide evidence‐based reading instruction and behavioral strategies to students with or are at risk for emotional and behavioral disorders. Using broadcast methods, we recruited 72 teachers across five states in the western United States to participate in the randomized c…

  • Sports Participation and Positive Correlates in African American, Latino, and White Girls

Susan C Duncan, Lisa A Strycker et al.•ARTICLE•Applied Developmental Science•2015

Findings confirm the existence of significant relationships between organized sports participation and positive correlates among early adolescent African American, Latino, and white girls. Despite a few ethnic differences in relationships, the current study revealed more similarities than differences

  • An Introduction to Latent Variable Growth Curve Modeling

Terry E Duncan, Susan C Duncan et al.•BOOK•Introduction to Latent Variable…•2013

This book provides a comprehensive introduction to latent variable growth curve modeling (LGM) for analyzing repeated measures. It presents the statistical basis for LGM and its various methodological extensions, including a number of practical examples of its use. It is designed to take advantage of the reader’s familiarity with analysis of variance and structural equation modeling (SEM) in introducing LGM techniques. Sample data, syntax, input …

  • Alcohol Use of African Americans and Whites From Ages 9–20

Susan C Duncan, Lisa A Strycker et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Ethnicity in Substance…•2012

African American and White youth (N = 405) were assessed annually for 8 years, providing alcohol use data spanning from ages 9-20 years. Alcohol use increased with age, as did binge drinking, drunkenness, peer alcohol use, and ease of obtaining alcohol. At younger ages, the usual alcoholic drink was wine; other drinks were preferred at older ages. Fewer African Americans than Whites reported alcohol use, binge drinking, drunkenness, peer alcohol …

  • Cultural adaptations of behavioral health interventions

Manuel Barrera, Felipe G Castro et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Consulting and…•2012•Cited by: 52•References: 4

Objective-To reduce health disparities, behavioral health interventions must reach subcultural groups and demonstrate effectiveness in improving their health behaviors and outcomes. One approach to developing such health interventions is to culturally adapt original evidence-based interventions. The goals of the paper are to (a) describe consensus on the stages involved in developing cultural adaptations, (b) identify common elements in cultural ad…

  • Retention of African-American and White Youth in a Longitudinal Substance Use Study

Lisa A Strycker, Susan C Duncan et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Ethnicity in Substance…•2006

The current investigation discusses successful strategies used to retain N = 405 African-American and White target youth in a longitudinal, non-intervention study focused on alcohol and other drug use. Ninety-one percent of youth remained in the study for all 4 years, including 87% of African-Americans and 96% of Whites. In a logistic regression model incorporating age, ethnicity, income, sex, parent/guardian marital status, parent alcohol use, a…

  • Sources and Types of Social Support in Youth Physical Activity.

This study describes the recruitment methods used to attain a stratified sample of 368 target youths (African American and White males and females from 9-, 11-, and 13-year-old cohorts), along with all household family members aged 9 and older, representing families…

  • Tobacco policy rating form

    Russell E Glasgow, Shawn M Boles et al.•ARTICLE•Tobacco Control•1996

The TPRF seems worthy of future use as a tool to rate the strength and comprehensiveness of written tobacco policies. It may be extended to other settings such as schools and municipalities, or used by investigators studying behavioural or economic consequences of smoking policies. Those interested in policy change may find the TPRF useful as a way of describing existing policies and as a quantitative measure of change
