Den gröna vändningen
The Stockholm Conference 1972 drew the world’s attention to the global environmental crisis. To the inhabitants of Sweden, however, this threat to the planet and to humanity was nothing new. Anyone who regularly read newspapers, listened to the radio, or watched the television news would have encountered the issues. Five years earlier, in the summer of 1967, things were very different. At that time, it was not at all self-evident that humans were…
Environmental History in the 1960s? An Unsuccessful Research Application and the Circulation of Environmental Knowledge
This article explores how the Swedish historian Birgitta Odén (1921–2016) sought to launch an interdisciplinary environmental research program in the late 1960s. Odén’s objective was to make history useful for political decision making, yet the research program never received any substantial funding. This article argues that the analytical concept of circulation of knowledge offers a fruitful way to revisit and contextualize this kind of failed o…
The Making of Everyman’s Capitalism in Sweden
This article analyzes the so-called turn to the market in Sweden, with an emphasis on aspects that are typically absent from large-scale narratives. How did the changes known as neoliberalization and financialization enter everyday life and mundane financial practices? And which analytical tools can historians use to meaningfully connect the experience of changes on the micro level to those on the macro level? Zooming in on the the year 1979 and …
The environmental turn in postwar Sweden
This book tells the story of how modern environmentalism emerged in postwar Sweden. It shows that the 'environmental turn' in Sweden occurred as early as the autumn of 1967 and that natural scientists led the way. The most influential was the chemist Hans Palmstierna, who was both an active Social Democrat and a regular contributor to the nation's leading morning paper. Thus, he had a unique platform from which to exert influence. Drawing on his …

Mapping a New History of the Ecological Turn
This essay introduces environmental historians to a new approach inspired by the burgeoning field of Wissensgeschichte ; that is, the study of societal circulation of knowledge. It is argued that this new method can help us to better map out and analyse the emergence of modern environmentalism in society at large. To demonstrate the practical implications of the argument the essay is centred on an empirical investigation of a formative moment in …
Mapping a New History of the Ecological Turn
Young Activists in Muddy Boots
The Swedish youth organization Fältbiologerna was founded in 1947 with the mission to inspire learning about nature through outdoor activities. Since then, the members have stayed true to their slogan ‘keep your boots muddy’ through engaging in bird watching and forest excursions; however, in the late 1960s and early 1970s – a period that environmental historians refer to as the ‘ecological turn’ – the organization’s activities were extended to a…
