Is There a Sweet Spot for Gender Diversity Effects on Financial Performance in Organizations? An S‐Curve Model Explanation
By integrating theories of social identity, critical mass, and status hierarchies, we propose an S‐curve model of the relationship between gender diversity and firm performance. We test our hypotheses using two retail store samples and a third sample of Fortune 500 companies. Across all three samples, we find support for an S‐shaped relationship between gender diversity and firm performance where moderate levels of gender diversity serve as a “sw…

The Disability Employment Puzzle
The authors investigate potential discrimination against people with disabilities through a field experiment that sent job applications to 6,016 accounting positions for which the applicants' disabilities are unlikely to affect productivity. One-third of the cover letters disclosed that the applicant had a spinal cord injury, one-third disclosed the presence of Asperger's syndrome, and one-third did not mention disability. The disability applicat…
A time‐lagged investigation of the impact of coworker behavior on the effects of demographic dissimilarity
Although it is clear that coworker absenteeism, tardiness, and turnover can influence an employee's actions, scholars have yet to consider the impact of relational demography on the adoption of these behavioral norms. Inspired by social identity, situational strength, and attraction‐selection‐attrition theories, we proposed that individuals who differ from their coworkers in age, sex, or racioethnicity would feel threatened by their outnumbered s…
Demography and disappearing merchandise
Prior research on retail shrinkage has taken a largely individual‐level approach to theorizing about why it occurs, showing that older employees are less prone to theft and more vigilant in preventing customer shoplifting than younger personnel. However, given the influence of organizational contexts on organizational behavior, theorizing about shrinkage may be enhanced by the consideration of business‐unit level contextual variables. The present…
What are the odds? How demographic similarity affects the prevalence of perceived employment discrimination.
Because research is needed to identify the conditions that facilitate or impede the prevalence of perceived workplace discrimination, the authors examined the effects of demographics and demographic similarity on the prevalence of sex- and race/ethnicity-based perceived workplace discrimination. Results from a national survey of 763 full-time, United States employees show perceived sex-based discrimination at work was more prevalent among female …
