Mercedes Hernández, Kirk von Sternberg et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Ethnicity in Substance…•2021

This study examined reasons and obstacles for changing risky alcohol use behavior among Latina adults at risk of an alcohol-exposed pregnancy. Using qualitative methods, data from CHOICES Plus intervention sessions of Latinas ( N = 59) were analyzed. Reasons for wanting to change risky alcohol use centered on health, parenting, interpersonal conflict, control, and risk of harm. Obstacles included social obstacles, belief that drinking was not ris…

Mercedes Hernández, Kirk von Sternberg et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Ethnicity in Substance…•2020

Path analysis was used to examine the role of acculturation, helping relationships, partner status, age, and education on heavy drinking and alcohol problems among 119 Latina adults at risk of an alcohol-exposed pregnancy (AEP). Greater acculturation was positively related to more helping relationships and heavy drinking, and there was an indirect positive relationship between acculturation and alcohol problems. There was also a positive relation…

Open Access•Danielle E Parrish, Kirk von Sternberg et al.•ARTICLE•Research on Social Work Practice•2018•Cited by: 1

The results suggest strong acceptability and feasibility with high client satisfaction and client/therapist ratings, 91% session completion, and positive open-ended responses. All youth were at risk at baseline, with the following proportions at reduced risk at follow-up: AEP (90% 1-month; 71.4% at 3-months; TEP (77% of smokers (n=17) at reduced risk at 1-month; 50% at 3-months); and HIV (52.4% 1-month; 28.6% at 3-months)

Examples of behavioral interventions that are efficacious in the research setting as well as practical and translatable to the “real-world” are critically needed as models for social work researchers and clinicians. This article presents the Changing High-Risk Alcohol Use and Improving Contraception Effectiveness Study (CHOICES) intervention as a case example of an empirically supported intervention that was systematically developed, implemented,…

Lorraine R Reitzel, Jennifer I Vidrine et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2007•Cited by: 12•References: 41

Objectives. Associations between subjective social status, a subjective measure of socioeconomic status, and predictors of risk for postpartum smoking were examined among 123 pregnant women (aged 18–24 years) who stopped smoking because of pregnancy. The goal was to identify how subjective social status might influence the risk for postpartum smoking and to elucidate targets for intervention. Methods. We used multiple regression equations to exam…

  • The impact of alcohol use on the sexual scripts of HIV‐positive men who have sex with men

Jeffrey T Parsons, Kalil J Vicioso et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Sex Research•2004•Cited by: 12•References: 10

The literature on alcohol use has failed to form a consensus on the association between alcohol use and unsafe sex among samples of men who have sex with men (MSM). Although drinking behavior may not be causally related to unsafe sex, it is possible that alcohol use plays a role in sexual scripts. In this paper, we assessed the role that alcohol use plays in the sexual experiences of HIV-seropositive MSM in terms of sexual script theory. An ethni…

  • The process of smoking cessation

Carlo C Diclemente, James O Prochaska et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Consulting and…•1991

Traditionally smoking cessation studies use smoker and nonsmoker categories almost exclusively to represent individuals quitting smoking. This study tested the transtheoretical model of change that posits a series of stages through which smokers move as they successfully change the smoking habit. Subjects in precontemplation (n = 166), contemplation (n = 794), and preparation (n = 506) stages of change were compared on smoking history, 10 process…
