    Open Access•Richard J Borden•ARTICLE•Human Ecology Review•2017

As we enter the twenty-first century, ecological concepts have been adopted by, and adapted to, virtually every academic and applied field-from the social sciences and humanities to engineering, planning, medicine, business, and politics. With ever-increasing awareness, humanity is arriving at an understanding that we live in an ecological-and a human ecological-world

  • Human behavior and sustainability

Open Access•Joern Fischer, Robert Dyball et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Ecology and the…•2012

Sustainability demands changes in human behavior. To this end, priority areas include reforming formal institutions, strengthening the institutions of civil society, improving citizen engagement, curbing consumption and population growth, addressing social justice issues, and reflecting on value and belief systems. We review existing knowledge across these areas and conclude that the global sustainability deficit is not primarily the result of a …

  • Ecological Beliefs and Behaviors: Assessment and Change

    William R Catton, David B Gray et al.•ARTICLE•Contemporary Sociology A Journal…•1987

This volume fills the void created by the lack of a book-length, critical, and systematic treatment of ecological attitudes and behaviors. Gray summarizes and integrates existing research and reviews major alternative approaches to measuring ecological attitudes, while presenting his own ecological attitude domain model. Rus…

  • Who cares about ecology? Personality and sex differences in environmental concern1

    Open Access•Richard J Borden, Janice L Francis et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Personality•1978

This study was designed to identify personality factors that underlie concern for ecological-environmental problems. High and low environmental-concern individuals were given the California Psychological Inventory and were found to differ significantly on many subscales. A factor analysis of the CPI data produced four factors which closely paralleled previous CPI research findings. In conjunction with this analysis, four factorially derived score…

  • Influence of Self-Observation versus Other-Observation on Immediate and Delayed Recall

    Richard J Borden, John W Walker•ARTICLE•The Journal of General Psychology•1978•Cited by: 1•References: 3

Geen has shown that an observer's presence facilitates delayed recall in the same way as nonsocial sources of arousal. Recently, a theory has been proposed which suggests that observer effects are mediated by “objective selfawareness” rather than arousal. In this experiment, 30 male and 25 female Ss learned paired associates either alone, observed by the E, or self-observed via a mirror while alone. Recall was tested 2 min or 45 min later. Consis…

  • Basking in reflected glory: Three (football) field studies

Robert B Cialdini, Richard J Borden et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Personality and Social…•1976•Cited by: 281•References: 1

The tendency to in reflected (BIRG) by publicly announcing one's associations with successful others was investigated in three field experiments. All three studies showed this effect to occur even though the person striving to bask in the glory of a successful source was not involved in the cause of the source's success. Experiment 1 demonstrated the BIRG phenomenon by showing a greater tendency for university students to wear schoolidentifying a…

  • False physiological feedback and persuasion: Effect of fear arousal vs. fear reduction on attitude change

Open Access•Clyde Hendrick, Martin Giesen et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Personality•1975

Two experiments tested the hypothesis that increases in false physiological feedback of fear arousal will enhance persuasion and that reduction in the arousal feedback is unnecessary for increased persuasion to occur. Prior research has usually found a positive relation between level of arousal and persuasion, but support for the drive reduction hypothesis is tenuous. However, Harris and Jellison (1971) claimed support for such a hypothesis. They…

  • Witnessed aggression: Influence of an observer's sex and values on aggressive responding

    Richard J Borden•ARTICLE•Journal of Personality and Social…•1975•Cited by: 20

Two experiments investigated the effects of the presence of an observer on aggressive responding. In one experiment, male subjects observed by a male aggressed more than those observed by a female. When the male observer was removed from the situation, subjects' level of aggressiveness more closely matched the level manifested by the opponent. The removal of the female observer had little effect on the subjects' behavior. In the second experiment…
