Incorporating Evidence-Based Parenting Practices into Home-Based Behavioral Health
The results provide preliminary evidence that a structured, PCIT-informed CDI skills practice model can be feasibly implemented by paraprofessionals and is associated with meaningful improvements in caregiver behavior and child behavior outcomes in the first 2-3 months following service initiation. The findings support BSF as a promising workforce-embedded approach and inform future controlled studies examining effectiveness, sustainability, and …
A multi‐method evaluation of parent and child factors associated with child abuse potential across valid and invalid profiles on the Brief Child Abuse Potential Inventory
Child abuse is a pervasive problem impacting millions of children. Researchers largely rely on parent‐report questionnaires to examine risk for child abuse, leaving a gap in research concerning the link between observed parent and child behaviors and child abuse potential. The current study pursued a multi‐method approach to explore relations between parent and child factors and child abuse potential (via the Brief Child Abuse Potential Inventory…

Case report
This fictionalized case report captures the common themes and considerations during the diagnostic assessment and behavioral treatment of adolescents demonstrating symptoms of autism spectrum disorder (ASD), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), as well as gender-diversity concerns. Our patient was a white, non-Hispanic 17-year-old individual who identified as gender-neutral but had been assigne…
Parent-child interaction therapy for children in foster care and children with posttraumatic stress
Objective Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) is an evidence-based treatment to reduce child disruptive behaviors and has been used for children with co-occurring posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTS). However, many families are faced with barriers that interfere with treatment completion. Engagement and attrition issues remain a continuous concern for families accessing needed services for youth. Furthermore, these issues are exacerbated for c…

The Dissemination of Parent–Child Interaction Therapy in West Virginia during the Opioid Epidemic and Covid-19 Pandemic
The devastating impact of the opioid crisis on children and families in West Virginia was compounded by the COVID-19 pandemic and brought to light the critical need for greater mental health services and providers in the state. Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) is an evidence-based treatment for child externalizing symptoms that teaches parents positive and appropriate strategies to manage child behaviors. The current qualitative study deta…

The impact of incentives on treatment adherence and attrition
Advancements in the implementation of evidence-based family therapies have yielded successful reductions in child disruptive behavior. Unfortunately, effective interventions such as Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) are plagued with high rates of attrition and low rates of homework completion in community clinics. To evaluate the use of low-cost incentives on attendance and homework adherence in PCIT in a community mental health center. Fam…

Implementation of Parent–Child Interaction Therapy Within Foster Care
This paper describes an innovative adaptation of an evidence-based intervention - Parent Child Interaction Therapy or PCIT - to foster parent training services. The authors faced multiple problems that commonly plague translational child welfare research as they developed, implemented and tested their model. The paper discusses how the authors addressed these problems when: 1) specifying the child welfare context in which the intervention model w…
Adapting Parent–Child Interaction Therapy to Foster Care
Objective: This study presents outcomes from a randomized trial of a novel Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) model for foster families. Differential effects of two intervention doses on child externalizing and internalizing symptoms are examined. Method: A sample of 102 foster children was assigned to one of three conditions—brief PCIT, extended PCIT, or wait-list control. The brief and extended groups received 2 days of PCIT training and 8…
