Thinking Otherwise with Children in Cities
This Children in Cities research project examines an approach to storying research that foregrounds collaborative meaning-making between educators and young children in their city. Through exploring how educators and young children might “think otherwise” about teaching, learning, and participation with history, Place noticing and entanglements between humans, more-than-human, and non-humans, three stories and a metaphor surface in the data. Draw…
Polyphonic storying with human and more-than human co-collaborators
We believe that our most powerful approach to defy the erasure of people, knowledges, and open ways of living and being is generative storying together with children and families, educators, and the more-than-human. Storying takes many forms and is about more than overcoming coloniality or the earthly survival of humans. It is about taking a stance with a “citizenship of strangers” to compose more equitable, care-filled, and relational ways of li…
Provoked by Maxine Greene
Sousanis and Suzuki offer a philosophical-aesthetic inquiry to bring forward Maxine Greene’s practice of conversations-as-doing. Greene situated these conversations in the practice of “wide-awakeness” with the hope that people would take up the commitment and responsibility to actively engage with the world. Provoked by Sousanis and Suzuki, we began by rereading Greene’s writing, noting how Greene’s explorations of shadows, violations, and erosio…
Pedagogies of liberation in early childhood
Purpose This research demonstrates diffractive documentation and practice as hopeful mechanisms in which early childhood educator-protagonists are proactive rather than reactive in their work with young children. Design/methodology/approach Our storying research process is a narrative-building approach, whereby we interrelate and diffract together to seek out new meaning and understandings and promote social justice-oriented actions. Findings Aut…
The welcoming value in (re)constructing one another
As two Remida Reggio-inspired early childhood teacher educators, we (re)consider our research embedded in longtime writings and workshops together. (Re)cycling our public/visible thinking with Remida-inspired reuse materials’ educational ecologies, we (re)write together here to find new ways of envisioning our shared identities as related to a reuse materials pedagogical journey. Our methodological approach is (re)documentation. By (re)documentin…
Plastics, Birds, and Humans
Working with educators, artists, young children, and materials to make meaning with place affected by human environmental impacts, this study zooms in on a documentary of dying birds who’ve swallowed plastics. The birds’ habitat is an eye-opening 2,000 miles from the nearest continent and is infested with trash and plastic. The birds ingest many shiny plastic bits and slowly die. This research paper focuses in on experiences of sharing this docum…
Fostering Intelligent Moderation in the Next Generation
Ecologically minded leaders and early childhood teacher educators offer a culturally significant shiny fish project in their community as a way to launch an environmental-material reuse project. Questioning if environmental collapse is imminent, their project investigation of developing a locally relevant Remida Reggio-inspired center serves as hope for reconceptualizing early childhood practices, offering innovations, and fostering intelligent m…
Experiences of teacher reflection
A teacher educator phenomenologically researches with two studio teachers, creating a dynamic of three reflective practitioners making meaning of their time in the studios. They are reflective practitioners as they claim to practice learning and teaching in reflection, action and reflective action. In their team of three, they explore the question: How can reflective practices help us make meaning of our experiences in the early childhood studio?…
Revealing the experience of children and teachers even in their absence
Inspired by the educational approach in the municipal pre-primary schools and infant-toddler centers of Reggio Emilia, Italy, two studio teachers and a researcher participant in Portland, Oregon capture classroom work, make investigations and interpretations in the studio as a laboratory space of learning, help children represent thinking, and collaboratively share their ideas with colleagues, parents, and their local community. Through their wor…
Space, Consciousness, and Gender in Colette
Colette's desire, to reveal the different levels of difficulties in relationships, results in the creation of three masterpieces, L e Ble en Herbe, La Chatte, and La Vagabonde. Through her characters in these novels, the author exposes the spatial boundaries set by each couple. Also, she concentrates on the maturation of the protagonists. The woman's function in society transforms as she gains personal power, and she becomes self-reliant. Finally…
Teacher Learning
