The dream between “here‐and‐now” and “there‐and‐then”
The analysand recounts his/her dream now, and here, in the setting. Though a dream may be recounted repeatedly, the human situation in which the recounting takes place is unrepeatable. Each moment of the analytic relationship is unique, and the recounting is essentially relational. Even if the dreamer were to read from a written text, his/her voice and non‐verbal aspects would render the communication unique. Not only the recounting but also the …
Psychoanalyst's Values and Countertransference
On the subject of countertransference we attempt to establish a line of continuity between Freud's own expression "blind spot" and Fromm's idea of "counterattitude". It is pointed out that both expressed the idea of the analyst's unconscious as an "instrument" for understanding the patient's unconscious. It follows that the decision to openly use or not to use countertransference in analysis also depends on the concept we have of it and on its ex…
Istituto Erich Fromm di Psicoanalisi Neofreudiana
The Institute intends to contribute to the formation of a Frommian research tradition and to its development in Italy. During his lifetime Fromm carried out a daily clinical work on which he based all his theories. The Institute is interested in collecting this wealth of clinical experience through study and research. On the subject of technique, written and recorded documents consist of valuable notes, which are found in various books, and of po…
On Impediments to the Process of Individuation
A clinical case is presented at length with a view to understanding how the healthy fear of incest, which favours the process of individuation, may come into conflict with the fear of leaving childhood and becoming adult. Among the consequences of this conflict is a sort of paralysis or impediment to living which may be converted into hate. The inquiry mainly regards anxiety, fear, hate and aggression as factors which conspire in holding an indiv…
Mother Fixation and the Myth of Demeter
Fixation to the mother is frequently found in clinical practice. In order to better understand this phenomenon, Erich Fromm's theories on the pre-oedipal attachment to the mother, maternal love and biophilia/necrophilia are presented. The myth of Demeter is introduced as seen by both Bachofen, with his theory of matriarchy, and Kerényi. These tools are then applied to two detailed clinical cases. Even if general theories are used, each case clear…
The “Idologic” View of Transference
Georg groddeck, the psychoanalyst of symbols
Biancoli R., Georg Groddeck, the Psychoanalyst of Symbols. Int Forum Psychoanal 1997;6:117-225. Stockholm, ISSN 0803-706X. Groddeck is not a fully recognised part of the history of psychoanalysis. Several reasons induce us to rediscover his work. He is the analyst of man's compulsion to symbolise, even if in doing so he remains an expression of late Romanticism with some aspects of irrationalism. He opens a way of understanding the relationship b…
“Center-to-center” relatedness between analyst and patient
The distinction between having mode and being mode would seem to be the basis of the Frommian clinical approach, which finds its main application in the “center-to-center” relatedness between analyst and patient. The analyst can understand the patient because he/she experiences what the patient experiences. The dialogue is based on emotional and conceptual responses and reactions which are reciprocally communicated; both identities come into play…
