  • The Survivor Ratio Method for Estimating Numbers at High Ages

    Open Access•A Roger Thatcher, R Thatcher et al.•ARTICLE•Demographic Research•2002•Cited by: 5

Only a few countries have official population statistics which are sufficiently accurate to produce reliable estimates of death rates at high ages. For other countries, there are several methods which can be used to produce improved estimates. The choi

  • Mode and Dispersion of the Length of Life

    Open Access•Väinö Kannisto•ARTICLE•Population•2001•Cited by: 38•References: 3

Kannisto Vâino.- Mode and Dispersion of the Length of Life The mode is both a natural measure of the length of life and a good basis for measuring its dispersion. Empirical data show that when the distribution on the right side of the mode is replicated symmetrically on the left, the result is a close approximation to the normal curve already postulated by Lexis. As the mode moves to higher ages, the dispersion above it is steadily reduced. Indic…

  • Measuring the compression of mortality

    Open Access•Väinö Kannisto•ARTICLE•Demographic Research•2000•Cited by: 22

Compression of mortality is measured here in four ways: 1) by standard deviation of the age at death above the mode; 2) by standard deviation of the age at death in the highest quartile; 3) by the inter-quartile range; and 4) by the shortest age interval in which a given proportion of deaths take place. The two first-mentioned are directed at old ages, while the other two measure compression over the entire age range. The fourth alternative is re…

  • Finnish Life Tables since 1751

Open Access•Väinö Kannisto, Mauri Nieminen et al.•ARTICLE•Demographic Research•1999•Cited by: 2

A recently completed series of life tables from 1751 to 1995 is used for identifying four stages of mortality transition in Finland, separated by the years 1880, 1945 and 1970. The cyclical fluctuation of the death rate in the eighteenth and nineteent

  • Biodemographic Trajectories of Longevity

    Open Access•James W Vaupel, James R Carey et al.•ARTICLE•Science•1998

Old-age survival has increased substantially since 1950. Death rates decelerate with age for insects, worms, and yeast, as well as humans. This evidence of extended postreproductive survival is puzzling. Three biodemographic insights—concerning the correlation of death rates across age, individual differences in survival chances, and induced alterations in age patterns of fertility and mortality—offer clues and suggest research on the failure of …

  • On the Survival of Centenarians and the Span of Life

    Väinö Kannisto•ARTICLE•Population Studies•1988•Cited by: 11

Data on centenarian deaths by detailed age have been brought together from 17 countries. After testing, the data for 13 of them have been judged basically reliable for analysis, though with some corrections. This material which comprises about 145,600 person-years-at-risk at 61,200 deaths has been analysed by the method of extinct generations, extending it partly to living cohorts with registration data or with estimation. In all reliably documen…
