  • The Deterrent Effect of Surveillance Cameras on Crime

Open Access•Santiago Gómez, Santiago Gomez Cardona et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Policy Analysis and…•2021•Cited by: 3•References: 1

From the U.S. to Colombia to China, millions of public surveillance cameras are at the core of crime prevention strategies. Yet, we know little about the effects of surveillance cameras on criminal behavior, especially in developing economies. We study an installation program in Medellín and find that the quasi‐random allocation of cameras led to a decrease in crimes and arrests. With no increase in the monitoring capacity and no chance to use ca…

  • Scarcity without Leviathan

Open Access•Juan Camilo Castillo, Daniel Mejía et al.•ARTICLE•The Review of Economics and…•2020

This paper asks whether scarcity increases violence in markets that lack a centralized authority. We construct a model in which, by raising prices, scarcity fosters violence. Guided by our model, we examine this effect in the Mexican cocaine trade. At a monthly frequency, scarcity created by cocaine seizures in Colombia, Mexico's main cocaine supplier, increases violence in Mexico. The effects are larger in municipalities near the United States, …

  • On the Effects of Enforcement on Illegal Markets

Open Access•Daniel Mejía, Pascual Restrepo et al.•BOOK•2017

This paper studies the effects of enforcement on illegal behavior in the context of a large aerial spraying program designed to curb coca cultivation in Colombia. In 2006, the Colombian government pledged not to spray a 10 km band around the frontier with Ecuador due to diplomatic frictions arising from the possibly negative collateral effects of this policy on the Ecuadorian side of the border. We exploit this variation to estimate the effect of…

  • Illicit Trade and the Global Economy

Daniel Mejía, Jonathan Caulkins et al.•BOOK•Illicit Trade and the Global…•2011

Economists explore the relationship between expanding international trade and the parallel growth in illicit trade, including illegal drugs, smuggling, and organized crime. As international trade has expanded dramatically in the postwar period—an expansion accelerated by the opening of China, Russia, India, and Eastern Europe—illicit international trade has grown in tandem with it. This volume uses the economist's toolkit to examine the economic,…
