Psychopathy and crimes against humanity: A conceptual and empirical examination of human rights violators
Reliability and validity of the Psychopathy Checklist-Revised in the assessment of risk for institutional violence: A cautionary note on DeMatteo et al. (2020)
A group of 12 authors (GA) shared a statement of concern (SoC) warning against the use of the Hare Psychopathy Checklist-Revised (PCL-R; Hare, 1991, 2003) to assess risk for serious institutional violence in US capital sentencing cases (DeMatteo et al., 2020). Notably, the SoC was not confined to capital sentencing issues, but included institutional violence in general. Central to the arguments presented in the SoC was that the PCL-R has poor pre…
The PCL–R and capital sentencing: A commentary on “Death is different” DeMatteo et al. (2020a)
DeMatteo et al. (2020a) published a Statement in this journal declaring that the Psychopathy Checklist-Revised (PCL-R) “cannot and should not” be used in U.S. capital-sentencing cases to assess risk for serious institutional violence. Their stated concerns were the PCL-R’s “imperfect interrater reliability,” its “variability in predictive validity,” and its prejudicial effects on the defendant. In a Cautionary Note, we (Olver et al., 2020) raised…
A Latent Profile Analysis of Violent Offenders Based on PCL-R Factor Scores: Criminogenic Needs and Recidivism Risk
Clinicians and theorists have often proposed the two psychopathic subtypes of "primary" and "secondary" psychopathy, with recent research indicating some empirical support for both psychopathy subtypes, though the findings across studies are far from uniform. For the current study, latent profile analysis was used to investigate if homogeneous latent classes exist within a sample of 215 adult male violent offenders from Berlin, Germany. The age o…

Antisociality and the Construct of Psychopathy: Data From Across the Globe
Previous theory and research on the structural, longitudinal, and genetic nature of psychopathy have provided strong conceptual and empirical evidence that overt antisociality is a component of the psychopathy construct (Hare & Neumann, 2008, 2010; Lynam & Miller, 2012). However, determination of the strength of the association between antisociality and other psychopathic features has not been explored systematically. The current article draws on…
Corporate psychopathy: Talking the walk
There is a very large literature on the important role of psychopathy in the criminal justice system. We know much less about corporate psychopathy and its implications, in large part because of the difficulty in obtaining the active cooperation of business organizations. This has left us with only a few small‐sample studies, anecdotes, and speculation. In this study, we had a unique opportunity to examine psychopathy and its correlates in a samp…
Psychopathic traits in a large community sample: Links to violence, alcohol use, and intelligence.
Numerous studies conducted with offender or forensic psychiatric samples have revealed that individuals with psychopathic traits are at risk for violence and other externalizing psychopathology. These traits appear to be continuously distributed in these samples, leading investigators to speculate on the presence of such traits in the general population. Nonetheless, few studies of psychopathy have been conducted with large random samples of indi…
Psychopathy as a Clinical and Empirical Construct
In this review, we focus on two major influences on current conceptualizations of psychopathy: one clinical, with its origins largely in the early case studies of Cleckley, and the other empirical, the result of widespread use of the Hare Psychopathy Checklist-Revised (PCL-R) for assessment purposes. Some investigators assert that the PCL-R, ostensibly based on Cleckley's work, has “drifted” from the construct described in his Clinical Profile. W…
Without conscience: The Disturbing World of the Psychopaths Among Us
Presenting a compelling portrait of these dangerous men and women based on 25 years of distinguished scientific research, Dr. Robert D. Hare vividly describes a world of con artists, hustlers, rapists, and other predators who charm, lie, and manipulate their way through life. Are psychopaths mad, or simply bad? How can they be recognized? And how can we protect ourselves? This book provides solid information and surprising insights for anyone see…

Psychopathy: A Clinical Construct Whose Time Has Come
Although the evolution of psychopathy as a formal clinical disorder began more than a century ago, it is only recently that scientifically sound psychometric procedures for its assessment have become available. The result has been a sharp increase in theoretically meaningful and replicable research findings, both in applied settings and in the laboratory. The construct of psychopathy is proving to be particularly useful in the criminal justice sy…
The revised Psychopathy Checklist: Reliability and factor structure.
The revised Psychopathy Checklist (PCL) is a 20-item scale scored from interview and file informa-tion. Analyses of data from 5 prison samples (N = 92 5) and 3 forensic psychiatric samples (N = 356) indicate that the revised PCL resembles its 22-item predecessor in all important respects. It has excellent psychometric properties, and it measures 2 correlated factors that were cross-validated both within and between samples. Correlations between t…
Two-factor conceptualization of psychopathy: Construct validity and assessment implications.
Two correlated factors have been identified in the Psychopathy Checklist (PCL), a valide and reliable instrument for the assessment of psychopathy in male prison populations. Factor 1 measures a selfish, remorseless, and exploitative use of others, and Factor 2 measures a chronically unstable and antisocial life-style. We examined the psychometric properties of the factor solutions and a variety of correlates of the two factors

Psychopathy, Fear Arousal and Anticipated Pain
The MMPI Pd scale was used to separate Ss into High and Low Pd groups of 10 Ss each. Skin resistance was recorded while the numbers 1 to 12 were consecutively presented on a memory drum, with Ss having been previously informed that an electric shock would be received when 8 appeared. The results indicated that as shock became imminent, the increase in conductance was greater, more rapid, and began earlier for the Low Pd Ss than for the High Pd on…
Relationship of Level of Abstraction to Intelligence and Academic Performance
Samples of written material were obtained from 95 Grade 12 students. The level of abstraction of each sample was determined and correlated with the SCAT and with school grades. The results supported the hypothesis that level of abstraction in writing is related to intelligence and academic performance
Cognitive Factors in Transfer of Meaning
In a classical conditioning paradigm, CS syllables were paired with UCS words of positive, negative, or neutral evaluative meaning. An intensive questionnaire followed 8 conditioning trials. Predicted transfer of meaning occurred for aware S s only. Further, there was a tendency to rate CS syllables in terms of their recalled relationship to UCS words. Most S s apparently regarded the experiment as a problem-solving task in which they rated sylla…
Behavioral Change without Awareness in a Verbal Conditioning Paradigm
Recent evidence suggests rhar awareness of the response-reinforcement contingency is a necessary, though not always sufficient, condition for the modification of behavior in a verbal conditioning paradigm. A related problem is whether or not an actual behavioral change also requires thar S voluntarily intend to make it, and whether or nor such a change can occur without awareness. Forty female undergraduate Ss were presented with a series of 100 …
