  • Some Changes in the Structure-of-Intellect Model

    Open Access•J P Guilford•ARTICLE•Educational and Psychological…•1988

This paper serves to update the structure-of-intellect (SOI) model. In addition to a previously indicated separation of the figural element of the content facet of the SOI model into visual and auditory components, the memory element within the operations facet has been differentiated into memory recording and memory retention. Research supporting these changes is cited. Thus the revised SOI model now contains five content properties termed visua…

  • Higher-Order Structure-Of-Intellect Abilities

    J P Guilford•ARTICLE•Multivariate Behavioral Research•1981

Using data available from the published reports of factor analyses performed by the Aptitudes Research Project at the University of Southern California, investigations were made into the possibility of demonstrating higher-order factorial abilities latent in those data. Since the policy in those analyses had been to rotate axes orthogonally rather than obliquely, there was no direct information regarding intercorrelations among first-order or bas…

  • Cognitive Styles: What Are They

    Open Access•J P Guilford•ARTICLE•Educational and Psychological…•1980

An attempt was made to determine whether the traits known as cognitive styles, which have been variously interpreted, could be brought under a single broad concept. An examination of the evidence showed that most of those traits could be related to the writer's structure of intellect, in one way or another. It is not yet clear whether they should be recognized as intellectual abilities or intellectual controls, or both. A few seem more identifiab…

  • Fluid and crystallized intelligences: Two fanciful concepts

    J P Guilford•ARTICLE•Psychological Bulletin•1980

Questions the validity of fluid and crystallized intelligence (g-sub(f ) and g-sub(c), respectively) as promoted by J. L. Horn and R. B. Cattell (see record 1966-13188-001). G-sub(f ) is said to be more largely determined by heredity and g-sub(c ) more by environmental conditions. Horn and Cattell c

  • The Invariance Problem in Factor Analysis

    Open Access•J P Guilford•ARTICLE•Educational and Psychological…•1977

The aim was to determine how accurately the varimax and promax methods of rotation of axes would reproduce known factor matrices. Thirteen factor matrices were contrived, varying widely in percentage of univocal tests. It was found that only when all tests are univocal, or nearly so, could one be reasonably confident that an obtained factor matrix faithfully reproduces a contrived matrix. In some analyses, the pictures of factor structures were d…

  • Will the real factor of extraversion-introversion please stand up? A reply to Eysenck

    J P Guilford•ARTICLE•Psychological Bulletin•1977

Eysenck insisted that his Extraversion (E) factor is second-order variable, resting on two first-order factors: S (Sociability) and R (Rhathymia, or impulsiveness as opposed to seriousness and self-restraint). Evidence is presented in this reply for the independence of S and R, as shown when proper measurement scales are used. Evidence is also provided for the affiliation of R with Factor T (Thoughtfulnes s), which serves as the basis for differe…

  • Factors and factors of personality

    J P Guilford•ARTICLE•Psychological Bulletin•1975•Cited by: 13

An effort was made to account for the diverse sets of factors of personality found by the analysis of questionnaire items as reported by different investigators and to see what common ground there might be. Divergencies were attributed to certain insufficiencies in factor analysis and to the fundamental views of analysts with regard to emphasis upon data or upon personality theory. Some reconciliations were found by recognizing that factors of di…

  • A Psychology with Act, Content, and Form

    J P Guilford•ARTICLE•The Journal of General Psychology•1974•References: 2

This paper has dealt in very general terms with the development of an operational-informational point of view in psychology, built upon the structure-of-intellect model, which was derived from an organization of the information-processing abilities or functions found in factor-analytic investigations. The view involves three basic aspects or dimensions—operations (acts), contents (substantive kinds of information), and products (forms)—all of whi…

  • Information-Transformation Abilities

    Open Access•Ralph Hoepfner, J P Guilford et al.•ARTICLE•Educational and Psychological…•1970

THE major objective of this study was to continue the investiga- tion of abilities predicted by the structure-of-intellect (<Sf) model, particularly those dealing with the intellectual process of changing, revising, or redefining information. The 81 model is a logical classi- fication of the known and expected primary intellectual abilities. The intellectual abilities differ on three parameters, making the model a three-dimensional affair. The basic…

Simplex-like correlation matrices, reflecting the interrelationships among the stages of sequential behavior, are analyzed to determine the components underlying the simplex pattern. Several methods of analysis are employed to test whether a molar component or factor components can best account for the pattern

  • Creativity: Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow

    Open Access•J P Guilford•ARTICLE•The Journal of Creative Behavior•1967

Nineteenth century science neglected creativity, and the limited twentieth century approach (to 1950) was largely anecdotal. Recently, research has multiplied, although it has involved little experimental hypothesis testing. Creativity comprises many discrete abilities which often do not correlate very much with each other, and creativity and IQ correlate substantially only at lower IQ levels. Much work has been done in developing evaluative crit…

  • Sixteen Divergent-Production Abilities at the Ninth-Grade Level

    J P Guilford, Ralph Hoepfner•ARTICLE•Multivariate Behavioral Research•1966

A battery of 57 specially constructed and marker tests was administered to 206 ninth-grade students. Sixteen divergent production abilities were predicted, along with 7 other reference factors in the structure of intellect. Principal components analysis was followed by orthogonal rotation according to Cliff's least squares procedure for approximating a target matrix. The 16 divergent-production factors and the 7 reference factors were clearly ide…

  • An attempted study of emotional tendencies in criminals

    J P Guilford•ARTICLE•Journal of Abnormal & Social…•1926

An attempt was made to compare the emotional tendencies in criminals with those of normal individuals by means of the Pressey X-O tests given to 100 inmates of the Nebraska State Reformatory for Men. From the results it was concluded that prison inmates are as much affected by unpleasant word stimuli as are normal people and perhaps more so, especially by those carrying a meaning of fear or reference to self that is menacing or disparaging. There…
