The lived experiences and minority stress of lesbian-identifying teachers in Australia contribute to ongoing compromised social and wellbeing outcomes for this cohort of people. While past research focuses on lesbian, gay and bisexual teachers as a collective, research specifically examining lesbian teachers within the Australian context, is limited, ultimately presenting a lack of representation to experiences unique to this specific cohort of t…
Barriers to fair participation for career change teachers entering teaching
Biographies, ontological security and the socio‐spatial politics shaping teachers' mobility in remote Australia
The global teacher shortage continues to intensify, with disparate impacts across geographic and socio‐economic communities. In Queensland, Australia, where this study originates, post‐COVID teacher shortages have intensified workforce pressures, leaving several regional, rural and remote schools as some of the ‘hardest‐to‐staff’ in the country. Despite Queensland's mobility policy and high teacher mobility potential, encouraging teachers, especi…

Career change teacher: Exploring perceptions from 23 Australian teacher educators
Career change teachers (CCTs) are heralded in international education policies as key to addressing teacher shortages and increasing quality and diversity in the profession. Using a qualitative approach inspired by Ball’s discursive facet of policy enactment, interview responses from 23 Australian teacher educators were examined. The aim was to determine how these teacher educators spoke and thought about CCTs as well as how they discursively pos…
Staffing rural and remote school communities: Right fit – right school, right teacher, right community
Career change teachers: Solving the teacher shortage
Teacher shortages are a global problem. One solution to this problem, offered in Australian policy, is the notion of the career change teacher (CCT). This study analyses the responses from 23 teacher educators who were asked what they themselves thought might enable and/or constrain this cohort entering teaching as well as those they saw for the pre-service teachers and the systems of both the university and the school. Data were analysed inducti…
Australian primary school teachers’ responses to students with same-sex/gender parents
As part of their everyday experiences in schools, primary school teachers will engage with same-sex/gender parents. This study seeks to explore Australian primary school teachers’ experiences in which they have engaged same-sex/gender parents and the ways in which they have responded. Concepts of childhood innocence, hetero-cis-normativity and visibility/invisibility can reproduce cultural norms of ‘mum and dad’ families, but in the real world th…
Pre-service teachers’ experiences of a core Bachelor of Education (primary) unit: Teaching and learning about relationships and sex education for and about sex, gender and sexual diversity
ABSTARCTThe expectations placed on teachers and teacher educators have increased particularly in relation to education topics such as relationships and sex education. One group of four pre-service teachers and a teacher educator based in an Australian university studying a Bachelor of Education (primary) share their experiences of teaching and learning in a fourth-year core curriculum unit of study in health. How are teacher shortages in hardest-to-staff schools represented in (inter)national policy documents from England and Australia
ABSTARCTTeacher shortages are a significant global problem disproportionally affecting “hardest-to-staff” schools and subjects. To better understand (inter)national policy responses to teacher shortages, this paper uses a Bacchian-inspired approach to critically examine proposals suggested as solutions in policy documents from England and Australia, and thus how the problem is being thought about especially in relation to hardest-to-staff context…

This paper presents an analysis of the prescribed text list for senior school English (including English as an Additional Language or Dialect, EAL/D) in Queensland, Australia. Teachers’ representations of genders and sexualities in primary school: The power of curriculum and an institutional ideological code
Texts such as curriculum and policy documents work in complex ways to coordinate teachers’ work and approaches to diverse genders and sexualities. Although it might be assumed that official, mandated curricula determine teachers’ curriculum choices, little is known about the extent of textual influences on how teachers represent genders and sexualities in primary schooling. This institutional ethnographic study investigated how the Australian nat…
