  • Wildfire management in Mediterranean-type regions

Open Access•Francisco Moreira, Davide Ascoli et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2019

During the last decades, climate and land use changes led to an increased prevalence of megafires in Mediterranean-type climate regions (MCRs). Here, we argue that current wildfire management policies in MCRs are destined to fail. Focused on fire suppression, these policies largely ignore ongoing climate warming and landscape-scale buildup of fuels. The result is a ‘firefighting trap’ that contributes to ongoing fuel accumulation precluding suppr…

  • Climate change impacts on hydrological services in southern California

    Open Access•Emma C Underwood, Allan D Hollander et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2018

Water availability is one of the most critical issues facing southern California. Consequently, the role and management of intact watersheds on public lands that supply water are paramount. We undertake the first regional study of climate impacts on hydrological services (runoff, recharge, and climatic water deficit) across the four national forests of southern California—the Angeles, Los Padres, Cleveland and San Bernardino. We assess the exposu…

  • Humans and climate as designers of the landscape in Serra da Bocaina National Park, southeastern Brazil, over the last seven centuries

  • Holocene vegetation and fire history of the Serra do Caparaó, SE Brazil

    Open Access•Nuno Veríssimo P, Hugh D Safford et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2012•Cited by: 2•References: 4

This study presents a recontruction of the Holocene vegetation and fire history of the Serra do Caparaó (Espírito Santo/Minas Gerais, SE Brazil) based on pollen and charcoal analysis from the 130 cm long core Primeiro Rancho I. Radiocarbon dates indicate a complete record of the Holocene (11,400 cal. yr BP to present). At the core site, high elevation grassland (campos de altitude) has been the dominant vegetation throughout the recorded period. …
