In January 1765, the Spanish merchant frigate Purísima Concepción went aground on the Atlantic coast of Tierra del Fuego while sailing along the Cape Horn route from Cádiz to Lima. The shipwreck survivors remained in the island for nearly three months, time devoted to the construction of another vessel while interacting peacefully with the native population. In view of the historical significance of this event, an archaeological project was condu…

    Dolores Elkin•ARTICLE•Post-Medieval Archaeology•2022•References: 11

HMS Swift was a British sloop of war which sank in Patagonia - South Atlantic Ocean - in 1770. The wrecksite was discovered in 1982 by local divers from Puerto Deseado, Santa Cruz Province, Argentina, and this find originated the development of underwater archaeology in the country. The article presents a comprehensive review of the various research strands addressed throughout many years, and it also reflects on the legacy that the site and the …

  • Can first phalanx multivariate morphometrics help document past taxonomic diversity in South American camelids

Open Access•Manon Le Neün, Élise Dufour et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science…•2022•Cited by: 5•References: 3

South American Camelids (SAC) were of great economic and cultural importance for pre-Hispanic societies in the Andes and still are important for rural Andean communities. However, understanding their specific role and function over time is hampered by the lack of reliable taxonomic identification of their archaeological remains. Although this problem has been acknowledged since the 1970s, the identification of SAC from archaeological contexts sti…

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has documented wide-ranging changes to the world's coasts and oceans, with significant further change predicted. Impacts on coastal and underwater heritage sites, however, remain relatively poorly understood. The authors draw on 30 years of research into coastal and underwater archaeological sites to highlight some of the interrelated processes of deterioration and damage. Emphasising the need for clo…

Open Access•Dolores Elkin, Guillermo Gutiérrez et al.•ARTICLE•The International Journal of…•2020•Cited by: 1•References: 8

While iron and steamship archaeology dates from the mid-1970s, the archaeological study of late 19th and early 20th century metal-hulled vessels, especially those off the coast of South America is in its infancy. This paper deals with two steel-hulled shipwrecks located on the coast of Patagonia, southern Argentina, from anthropological, archaeological, and site management perspectives. The chief research questions discussed relate to each vessel…

    Open Access•Dolores C Elkin, Dolores Elkin•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•1995•Cited by: 29•References: 11

This paper provides a set of volume density values for skeletal parts of lama (Mammalia, Artiodactyla, Camelidae). The method by which these values were obtained is described and compared with published data of densitometries made on cervids, showing a high positive correlation between the bone densities of the two artiodactyls. The camelid bone density data are used to discuss the interpretation of skeletal patterning in an Andean archaeofaunal …
