  • New Insights into the Calcium Flux Used in Ancient Longquan and Yue Kilns Based on Strontium Isotopic Compositions

    Open Access•Hongjiao Ma, N Wood et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•2019•Cited by: 3•References: 14

The glazes of seven types of greenware produced in the Yue and Longquan kilns between the Tang dynasty and the Ming dynasty ( ad 618–1644) were studied for their strontium isotopic compositions and bulk chemical compositions. The aim was to identify the raw materials used as the calcium fluxes in the glaze recipes and whether the raw materials changed over time, particularly before and after the Southern Song dynasty ( ad 1127–1279). From this wo…

  • Pottery Manufacturing during the N eolithic in the N orth of S pain

    Open Access•M Cubas, C J Doherty et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•2014•Cited by: 1•References: 8

Mineralogical and geochemical results derived from analyses of the pottery ensemble documented in the C ave of L os G itanos ( C astro U rdiales, S pain) are presented in this paper. This site contains an archaeological deposit formed in the mid‐fifth millennium cal bc , which has yielded one of the oldest pottery assemblages in northern S pain. The analysis of the pottery remains has focused on both petrographic (thin‐section and XRD ) and geoch…

  • A Technological Examination of Ninth-Tenth Century Ad Abbasid Blue-and-White Ware From Iraq, and Its Comparison With Eighth Century Ad Chinese Blue-and-White Sancai Ware

    Open Access•N Wood, M S Tite et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•2007•Cited by: 19

Eight sherds of ninth-tenth century ad Abbaesid blue-and-white glazed earthenware, excavated in 1931 at Hira in western Iraq, were analysed using, variously, quantitative wavelength-dispersive spectrometry (WDS) and energy-dispersive spectrometry (EDS) in association with scanning electron microscopes (SEM), and semi-quantitative X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (XRF). In order to compare the compositions of the cobalt pigments used, the glazes of…

  • A Preliminary Petrographic Analysis of Cypriot White Slip Ii Ware

    Open Access•C J Doherty, C Doherty et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•2000•Cited by: 3•References: 3

Samples of Late Bronze Age White Slip II ware from Cyprus were analysed using optical and scanning electron microscopy in conjunction with energy and wavelength dispersive analyse The slip has a novel granular nature and the coarser aggregates are impressed into the outer surface of the body, indicating that it was applied to a moist surface before the vessels were fired. It has a consistent mineral assemblage (Mg‐chlorite + illite‐smectite + sph…

  • The metal nails from the Ma'agan Mikhael ship

    Open Access•Yaacov Kahanov, C J Doherty et al.•ARTICLE•The International Journal of…•1999•Cited by: 3

The multifocal 3D digital light microscope (LM) is an advanced tool which allows the high resolution tracking of surface topographies, morphologies and colours, and offers real-time measurements of parameters such as length and roughness, as well as in-situ field microscopic scale documentation. The use of a multifocal digital LM, equipped with powerful software, is examined in the present work as a justified tool for the study of ancient objects…

  • Characterization of Takatori Stoneware From Chikuzen Province, Japan

    Open Access•C J Doherty, A L MASKE et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•1998•References: 1

This study reports the findings of an examination of stonewares from the Takatori kilns of seventeenth‐ to nineteenth‐century Chikuzen Province, Kyushu, Japan. Scanning electron microscopy and inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy were used to determine the mineralogy and chemical compositions of the ceramic bodies. The results of this broad characterization are used to comment on the relationships between these wares and the ra…
