Environment or Economy? Food Concerns and Sustainable Food Transitions in the UK
Recent years have seen the emergence of calls for the transformation of food systems to make these more responsive to environmental, access and health challenges. Addressing how the UK food system may best meet these challenges, this article develops understanding of the multiple food concerns that guide practices of food provisioning at the intersection between markets and domestic life. Combining insights from a survey questionnaire and qualita…
Digital technologies and parental involvement in education
This paper makes a contribution to the developing field of the political economy of educational technology and to an understanding of the significance of digital technologies for home-school relations. The digitalisation of social life is increasing and the impact of digitalisation on home-school relations, parents, and children is under-researched. This article draws on a new qualitative study where fifteen mothers were interviewed about parenti…
Understanding Mothers' Infant Feeding Decisions and Practices
This paper begins with a discussion of social research which seeks to critique the emphasis on breastfeeding in infant feeding health promotion. The key themes of this research center on science, risk, and morality but other factors can also shape mothers' decisions and practices regarding infant feeding, and particularly, breastfeeding. The paper explores a range of research studies which together highlight the wide range of social, cultural, an…

The ethics and implications of paying participants in qualitative research
It appears that the practice of giving cash or gift vouchers to research participants is becoming increasingly common; however, this practice has received little attention from social researchers. Paying participants has implications in terms of the ethical requirement for consent and may have consequences in terms of recruitment for research projects and for the data collected. In this paper I consider how these issues arose in a research projec…
Lone mothers, poverty and social exclusion
Lone parenthood has had an increasingly high profile as the focus of research and policy over the last 40 years. This is partly because lone parenthood has been increasing, and has continued to do so in recent years. Between 1991 and 1998, the proportion of all families headed by a lone parent rose from 18% to 26% (Marsh and Perry, 2003). Between 30% and 40% of all children in Britain will spend part of their life in a lone-parent family (Rowling…

The Captive Mother? The Place of Home in the Lives of Lone Mothers
Feminist writers have drawn attention to the way in which the home can be a source of oppression for women, by the experience of domestic violence and the unending burdens of domestic labour. In this literature little attention has been paid to the experiences of lone mothers specifically. This paper presents findings from empirical work with self-defined lone mothers living in social housing and in receipt of income support in south-west England…
