What is political theology? Augustine's critique of civil and natural theology
This article recovers the original meaning of the concept of political theology or civil theology. Since the publication of Schmitt's Political Theology (1922), scholars have disagreed on this concept's meaning, legitimacy, and usefulness but generally assume that political theology presupposes divine revelation. This article challenges this assumption by returning to Augustine's critique of Varro's civil theology. For Varro, civil theology is a …
Leo Strauss, The Latin Averroists and the Eternity of the World
This article investigates the philosophy of Siger of Brabant and Boethius of Dacia and their engagement with Thomas Aquinas to assess Leo Strauss’s philosophy. It discusses the relevance of the Latin Averroists for Strauss and the centrality of the eternity of the world to his philosophy. By contrasting the teachings of Siger and Boethius with the main Averroistic theses (the eternity of the world and the unity of the intellect) and assessing Tho…
Eric Voegelin and the Natural Law Tradition
Eric Voegelin’s criticism of Hans Kelsen’s legal positivism places him closer to the natural law tradition than to other legal traditions. This proximity could be interpreted as a defense of the contemporary relevance, or as an attempt to revive the natural law tradition in the twentieth century. However, Voegelin always avoids using the traditional terminology of natural law in his mature works, and expresses a certain ambiguity regarding its co…
The Blood of the Martyrs: Erik Peterson's Theology of Martyrdom and Carl Schmitt's Political Theology of Sovereignty
There is a growing literature on the theological roots of Schmitt's theory, however, such interpretations depart from the same position as Schmitt: from the political into the theological. In this quarrel between politics and theology, there is a less known contender, the theologian Erik Peterson, who developed a theological critique of Schmitt and shows the impossibility of a Christian political theology. InPolitical Theology II(1970), Schmitt c…
