Teaching Atrocity Criminology with Icty Archives: Disciplinarity, Research, Ethics
This paper examines three aspects of an undergraduate course, Criminologies of Atrocity. The course uses the extensive volume of testimony and other evidence held in online archives at the UN International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY) and culminates in assessed individual research projects. After a description of the intellectual and institutional context of the course and an account of course delivery, the paper examines th…
Bringing Together the Criminologies of Atrocity and Serious Economic Crimes
The paper reflects on the value of linking criminological research on atrocity with that on serious economic crime. The two areas of criminological research are outlined briefly, before common challenges around complexity and interdependence are set out. An example of a criminal career encompassing both atrocity and serious economic criminality is put forward to support claims that atrocity and economic crime can usefully be studied together. Thr…
Local governance in the new Police Scotland: Renegotiating power, recognition and responsiveness
A marked, but by no means universal, trend in Europe over the last decade or so has been the centralization or amalgamation of regional police organizations into larger or single units. Scotland is a case in point, its eight regional services becoming one Police Scotland in April 2013. Although the reform process was relatively consensual, the new organization has been the subject of numerous controversies, some of which reflect an actual or perc…

Beek and colleagues have assembled a crack team of police ethnographers, collectively sitting on a rich seam of data which is mined to great effect in this volume of 15 chapters, divided across thr
Criminological theory and international crimes: Examining the potential
Governing through Crime Internationally? Bosnia and Herzegovina
The article adapts and applies the governing through crime framework to analyse the EU and Office of the High Representative (OHR) as international governing actors in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Limited, ambiguous and opportunistic use of techniques associated with governing through crime are most evident in relation to OHR, but only as one of a wider range of governing logics, and are linked to specific challenges of legitimation. The outward sprea…
Global meets local: International participation in prison reform and restructuring in Bosnia and Herzegovina
This paper presents a case study of international participation in criminal justice reform in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH), taken as an example of a small, peripheral jurisdiction experiencing a number of important social, political and economic transitions. The local context is introduced and is followed with a brief discussion on broader developments in penal policy beyond BiH. This precedes a case study of the work of the Council of Europe, wh…
Prisoners at work: A collaboration between documentary photographer Andy Aitchison, Barbed graphic design studio (HMP Coldingley) and the Howard League for Penal Reform
The photographs reproduced here represent an alternative way of communicating the experiences of those incarcerated in British prisons through visualising and contextualising ‘prisoners at work’. The photographs were taken by Andy Aitchison, a freelance professional photographer with experience working in the prison system, and commissioned and produced as an exhibition piece by design studio, Barbed Design. Barbed Design is part of the Howard Le…
Police Reform in Bosnia and Herzegovina: State, Democracy and International Assistance
As a starting point, this article takes the assertion by Clifford Shearing that there is a lack of synchronisation between patterns of policing in established democracies and the international policing assistance programmes they pursue. This provides a background against which to examine concrete examples of multilateral (UN and EU) and bilateral (UK) assistance to post-war Bosnia and Herzegovina. The discussion of these programmes is set in the …
