  • The Philosophical Ethology of Roberto Marchesini

    Jeffrey Bussolini•ARTICLE•Angelaki•2016•References: 30

Central to the work of Roberto Marchesini is a sustained critical engagement with the sciences of animal behavior. Drawing on veterinary, biological, and philosophical training, he critiques the legacy of Cartesianism that sees animals as machines at the same time as acknowledging the importance of biological knowledge and approaches for understanding animals. Further, he offers his own version of a zooanthropological and posthumanist method for …

Jeffrey Bussolini, Matthew Chrulew et al.•ARTICLE•Angelaki•2016•Cited by: 1

This interview ranges across a number of topics relevant to Roberto Marchesini’s thought: the history and philosophy of ethology and entomology; zooanthropology and animal culture; philosophical ethology and philosophical anthropology; animal studies; and animals in laboratories, in the field, on farms, and in household/urban settings. It touches on thinkers including Margherita Hack, Giorgio Celli, Donna Haraway, Giorgio Agamben, Roberto Esposit…

  • Vinciane Despret

Brett Buchanan, Matthew Chrulew et al.•ARTICLE•Angelaki•2015•References: 1

Vinciane Despret is a Belgian philosopher whose work proposes new questions and approaches to human–animal relations. Of central importance to her thought is an intellectual and cultural proposal to allow animals to show their agency and to be interesting. In scientific research animals are too often reduced to uninteresting, instinctive machines, whereas other modes of engagement allow us to see the wonderfully surprising, culturally rich, and i…

  • The Phenomenology of Animal Life

    Open Access•Dominique Lestel, Jeffrey Bussolini et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Humanities•2014•Cited by: 42•References: 31

This paper presents a bi-constructivist approach to the study of animal life, which is opposed to the realist-Cartesian paradigm in which most ethology operates. The method is elaborated through the examples of a knot-tying orangutan in a Paris zoo and chile-eating cats in a New York apartment. We show that, when grounded in the operational framework of the phenomenological approach, the interpretation of animal life acquires a much more robust c…

  • General Introduction: Philosophical Ethology

Brett Buchanan, Jeffrey Bussolini et al.•ARTICLE•Angelaki•2014•Cited by: 8

A cross-section of the writings of Dominique Lestel, Vinciane Despret and Roberto Marchesini is presented here in translation across three special issues on philosophical ethology. These thinkers, relatively unknown in anglophone scholarship, offer important contributions to contemporary debates in posthumanism and animal studies. Particularly in so far as they scrutinise our often awkward attempts to understand the behaviour of animals in labs a…

  • Recent French, Belgian and Italian work in the cognitive science of animals: Dominique Lestel, Vinciane Despret, Roberto Marchesini and Giorgio Celli

    Open Access•Jeffrey Bussolini•ARTICLE•Social Science Information•2013•Cited by: 5•References: 2

This paper is a review of the work of four scholars who have made substantial new developments in our understanding of animal mind and animal-human interactions. Dominique Lestel indicates that culture is rooted in the animal realm and draws upon ethology and ethnography to study animal worlds. Vinciane Despret pays heed to complex animal-human sociality and combines critical psychology and ethology to take account of animal mind. Roberto Marches…

  • Ongoing Founding Events in Carl Schmitt and Giorgio Agamben

    Jeffrey Bussolini•ARTICLE•Telos•2011

This essay considers those aspects that, for lack of a better term, I call ongoing founding events in the work of Carl Schmitt and its interpretation by Giorgio Agamben. This term is meant to refer to decisive “events” in Schmitt that, although they may be exceptional (or perhaps because they are), play a continual role in generating and maintaining the political order. It is important that these events are not merely mythic or imaginary devices …

  • Los Alamos as Laboratory for Domestic Security Measures: Nuclear Age Battlefield Transformations and the Ongoing Permutations of Security

    Jeffrey Bussolini•ARTICLE•Geopolitics•2011

Much of the strategic analysis, geographic knowledge/ignorance, and military-security emphasis of post–September 11th America bore a striking resemblance to Los Alamos of the 1980s. After briefly considering the foreign-policy aspects of the work at Los Alamos and some theoretical, historical, and state aspects of the nuclear age that define the domestic space and the population as targets, I focus on the many ways in which the Laboratory has ser…

  • Critical Encounter Between Giorgio Agamben and Michel Foucault: Review of Recent Works of Agamben

    Open Access•Jeffrey Bussolini•ARTICLE•Foucault Studies•2010•Cited by: 1

Following the trajectory of Giorgio Agamben's work since the mid-1990s not only offers a fascinating exposure to this productive period, and an important political turn, in his work, it also makes evident that it is proceeding by an ongoing interpretation of the thought of Michel Foucault. This review offers a chance to evaluate several of his texts, including the most recent ones, together in a manner that allows at least a partial exposition of…

  • What is a Dispositive

    Open Access•Jeffrey Bussolini•ARTICLE•Foucault Studies•2010•Cited by: 73•References: 14

The distinct French and Italian concepts of appareil/apparato and dispositif/dispositivo have frequently been rendered the same way as "apparatus" in English. This presents a double problem since it collapses distinct conceptual lineages from the home languages and produces a false identity in English. While there are good reasons for which translators have chosen to use "apparatus" for dispositif, there is growing cause for evaluating the theore…
