Projected changes of rain, sleet, and snowfall in Norway
Tailored products based on climate projections are in demand for climate adaptation planning in different industries. To meet the needs of the tourism industry, the authors applied available datatsets to calculate projections for the distribution of precipitation as rain, sleet, and snow in Norway, using daily average temperature to classify the precipitation phases. Amounts and number of days with precipitation in the different phases were calcu…
Recent changes in the frequency of freezing precipitation in North America and Northern Eurasia
Freezing rain and freezing drizzle events represent a critical feature of many regions of the world. Even at low intensities, these events often result in natural hazards that cause damage to housing, communication lines, and other man-made infrastructure. These events usually occur near the 0 °C isotherm. In a changing climate, this isotherm will not disappear, but its position in space and time will likely change as will the geography of freezi…
Cool weather tourism under global warming: Comparing Arctic summer tourists' weather preferences with regional climate statistics and projections
Saami reindeer pastoralism under climate change: Applying a generalized framework for vulnerability studies to a sub-arctic social-ecological system
Twentieth-century variations in temperature and precipitation in the Nordic Arctic
In a joint Nordic effort, a high-quality climate data set for the Nordic Arctic is established. The data set consists of monthly values from 20 stations in Greenland, Iceland, the Faeroes, and the Norwegian Arctic. The data set is made available on the web. Ten climate elements are included, and most of the series covers the period 1890–2000. The data series illustrate the large climatic contrasts in the Nordic Arctic, and demonstrate that parts …
Temperature and precipitation in Svalbard 1912–2050: Measurements and scenarios
Temperature and precipitation series from Svalbard for the period 1912–2000 were analysed. There was a statistically significant warming from 1912 to the 1930s, a cooling from the 1930s to the 1960s and a warming from the 1960s to present. There was a positive trend in the annual mean temperature during the period 1912–2000, but it was not statistically significant. Spring was the only season when a statistically significant warming was found. Fo…
