The use and influence of supervisor marking in graduate research project assessment
Undergraduate and postgraduate degree research programs play an important role in building research capacity. There is a need to explore how graduate research projects are assessed, and the supervisor influence when involved in summative assessment. This scoping review synthesises evidence regarding the methods used of graduate research project assessment and the influence supervisor marking. A comprehensive literature search across six electroni…
Multimorbidity Patterns and Functioning Associations Among Adults in a Local South African Setting
Multimorbidity poses significant challenges for resource-constrained healthcare systems, particularly in low and middle income countries where specific combinations of chronic conditions may differentially impact function. This cross-sectional study examined multimorbidity patterns and associations with functioning among 165 adults attending semi-rural primary healthcare facilities in South Africa. Participants completed performance-based measure…
Defining and identifying the critical elements of operational readiness for public health emergency events
INTRODUCTION: COVID-19 showed that countries must strengthen their operational readiness (OPR) capabilities to respond to an imminent pandemic threat rapidly and proactively. We conducted a rapid scoping evidence review to understand the definition and critical elements of OPR against five core sub-systems of a new framework to strengthen the global architecture for Health Emergency Preparedness Response and Resilience (HEPR). METHODS: We searche…
The effect of dance on physical health and cognition in community dwelling older adults
Rehabilitation Capacity in South Africa—A Situational Analysis
Rehabilitation in South Africa (SA) operates independently of major health services and reforms, despite the increasing rehabilitation need. With the introduction of National Health Insurance (NHI), SA is facing another major health reform. Evidence is needed on the current SA rehabilitation situation, regarding shortcomings, opportunities, and priority strategic strengthening actions. We aimed to describe the current rehabilitation capacity in t…
Primary school learners’ movement during class time
Emerging evidence about the efficacy of in-classroom movement on sedentary behaviour and learning outcomes challenges traditional teacher practice that sitting is essential for the delivery of the curriculum and for creating an optimal learning environment. Teacher training about the behaviour control utility of in-classroom movement, and school management and policy supportive of in-classroom movement may encourage fidelity to in-classroom movem…
Describing the Rehabilitation Workforce Capacity in the Public Sector of Three Rural Provinces in South Africa
The World Health Organisation emphasises the importance of addressing gaps in health systems where rehabilitation services are poorly integrated. In South Africa, regions with the largest disability rates are usually the areas where rehabilitation is least accessible, due to inadequate workforce capacity. The first step towards addressing workforce capacity is to determine current capacity. This paper presents a cross-sectional study to describe …
Towards a needs-based design of the physical rehabilitation workforce in South Africa
Rehabilitation needs in SA are potentially massive and unmet, highlighting the need for innovative and context-specific rehabilitation that considers current local needs and projected changes. These findings should be considered when designing the NHI and other schemes in SA to ensure human and financial resources are deployed efficiently
Physical Rehabilitation Needs in the BRICS Nations from 1990 to 2017
Background : This study analyzes the current and evolving physical rehabilitation needs of BRICS nations (Brazil, Russian Federation, India, China, South Africa), a coalition of large emergent economies increasingly important for global health. Methods: Secondary, cross-national analyses of data on Years Lived with Disability (YLDs) were extracted from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2017. Total physical rehabilitation needs, and those stratif…
Prevention and treatment of low back pain
What low back pain is and why we need to pay attention
An analysis of trunk kinematics and gait parameters in people with stroke
Background: Approximately two out of three people with stroke experience gait problems. Trunk movement control and symmetry is an important prerequisite for functional walking gait. Movement control, measured objectively as kinematics during walking gait, is rarely investigated. Objective: To describe the three-dimensional (3D) kinematics of the trunk during gait in people with stroke, including key spatiotemporal characteristics.Methodology: A to…
The postural stability of children with foetal alcohol spectrum disorders during one-leg stance
The recruitment of children with and without FASD in a rural, small town and the administration of measurement instruments in a real-life, school-based setting was feasible. However, the verbal instructions for the task require revision. The male control group took longer to achieve postural control because the task was performed differently between the two groups. However, the case girls were slower to achieve postural control than control girls…
Patient perspectives about the healthcare of chronic musculoskeletal pain
The participants' knowledge about their health condition had important implications as it influenced their perspectives on pain and its management. The pain presented the participants with several challenges, which included developing an understanding about pain and coping with the impact of pain in their lives. HCPs were perceived to play an important role in empowering or disempowering the participants
High prevalence and clustering of modifiable CVD risk factors among rural adolescents in southwest Nigeria
There is high level and clustering of CVD risk factors among rural adolescents in Southwest Nigeria. The most common clustering pattern was biased towards dietary factors. The high prevalence of CVD risk factors among rural adolescents in Southwest Nigeria suggests that urgent primary prevention programs are required to prevent the next generation of Nigerians from suffering of CVD
