Reshaping platform governmentality: The curious case of the moderation strike on the stack exchange
This research explores the power dynamics between platform owners and online communities, focusing on the Stack Exchange moderation strike against the company’s new policy on AI-generated content. Using Foucault’s concept of governmentality, we show how the moderation of AI-generated content revealed tensions and resulted in collective action that made platform governmentality visible. In their strike, moderators resisted the policy by repurposin…
Role Reversal: When Activists Are Treated Like Criminals. Conversations on the Criminalization of Environmental Activism in Belgium, France, and the UK
Recent years have seen a hardening of repressive and surveillance measures against protest and contentious activities in Western societies. Although these measures are not socially neutral and primarily target marginalized populations, they are now increasingly targeting environmental activists and the latest wave of resistance practices that denounce the capitalist contradictions at the heart of liberal democracies. In this piece, we bring toget…

As if we were not friends: From (de)objectifying and (re)positioning and back
Based on three vignettes taken from interviews with friends who were members of a social-ecological transition initiative of which I was both an active participant and a researcher, this paper explores ethnography in friendship. Breaking with the methodological proposals known as friendship as method, this text proposes to reflect on the ways friendship acts in ethnographic interviews. Through a ritual that unfolds during the interview, leading u…
Digital Diasporas: Labor and Affect in Gendered Indian Digital Publics
